During a recent convention of top banking executives, Rebecca "Becky" Caplice was greeted with enthusiasm by a colleague. Although she was working at that time as chief operating officer for Greenfield Savings Bank, Caplice had recently discovered she was on track to become chief executive officer of the bank as of 2007. The other executive wanted to welcome her to that small but elite group - female bank CEOs.

A hotel rises

Last May, site work had just started on the new Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Hadley, a location that was the former home of the Quonset club. A Holiday Inn Express can be seen in the background, with trucks traveling on Route 9. The new hotel is a $9.6 million project and will have 96 rooms, 64,000 square feet of space, a restaurant and banquet facilities for 200 people. It is expected to open in May, adding to a growing roster of accommodations in Hadley. The Parmar family, which owns the Pioneer Valley Hotel Group, is expanding the Quality Inn and says business is good at its new Hampton Inn.
