UMass Sports

A fool and his money...

In an attempt to revitalize this blog once the fall arrives, I'm playing around with ideas for some fun features to do regularly once the school year starts. The next few weeks will be kind of a test kitchen of sorts to see what gets on the menu and what I'm embarassed to have ever considered. Some ideas won't make it past August, some will become important parts of Gazette coverage for the next several decades and will affect society even more than the music 0

The uncle/guardian of former Memphis basketball player Pierre Henderson-Niles is accusing former coach John Calipari and UMass coach Derek Kellogg, who is a former Memphis assistant coach, of having a pay-for-play system in place for Henderson-Niles during his time at Memphis. According to NBC Sports, Stephen Saine, Henderson-Niles' uncle has done time in prison for selling drugs and has written an autobiography that he trying to sell about turning his life around. Henderson-Niles refuted the claims in the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Henderson-Niles was a three-star 0

The Pac 12's proposal to change the NCAA and how the changes might affect UMass/smaller schools

The Associated Press broke down the Pac 12's proposal to change the NCAA's model. Everything in normal or bold text below is from that story. Anything in italics is my thoughts or analysis. I'm not looking at this from a best-for-the-NCAA as much as a what's best for UMass. Pac-12 presidents back new NCAA model By ANTONIO GONZALEZ - AP Sports Writer Pac-12 university presidents have sent a letter to their colleagues at the other four major football conferences calling for sweeping changes to the 1

Deadspin: Derrick Gordon caught in the middle of activists' rivalry

Deadspin has a long feature looking at the back story of Derrick Gordon's coming out and the controversy between the Athlete Ally You Can Play and other organizations. I don't want to overly color your opinion before reading it, but it's interesting and worth checking out. 0

Matt Vautour: UMass to the Sun Belt? It could happen

Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson told CBS Sports that his conference and the University of Massachusetts have had discussions about the Minutemen joining as a football-only member. It’s a pretty good bet that if it’s at the point where Benson is willing to admit the talks publicly, there’s a legitimate chance of this happening. Benson is no stranger to conference shifting. He’s the former commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference, which has had more turnover than a community college. The Sun Belt office offered no 0

UMass TE Rob Blanchflower drafted by Pittsburgh in seventh round

Rob Blanchflower arrived at the University of Massachusetts with just a partial scholarship. He’s leaving as an NFL draft pick. The tight end from Leominster was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the seventh round (No. 230 overall) Saturday in the NFL draft. Blanchflower wasn’t available for comment. Steeler draft picks are doing all interviews from Pittsburgh on Monday. But Pittsburgh general manager Kevin Colbert said he was glad to add the Leominster native. Extra Katie Ferris

I had a lot of good quotes that didn't make it into my story on Ferris that's in Saturday's paper. Coach Angela McMahon on Ferris: On her leadership: She just deferred to upperclassmen. But at things went along she found more confidence in her voice. This year in particular, she’s stepped up in terms of embracing that role.  On Ferris making the most of the days she feels healthier: She tries to maximize the times that she does feel good. You see a whole other side 0
