Week guide: Dec. 2 Wild poll swings - Villanova

Tipping off  I believe in wild poll swings early in the year. Anything else would imply that my preseason suppositions hold more weight than actual results. I didn't have Villanova anywhere near my top 25. Wins over Mt. St. Mary's, Delaware and Lafayette was moving the needle for me. But after beating USC, Kansas and Iowa, Villanova is legitmate. How legitimate? I've got the Wildcats No. 6. There will be people that have Villanova below Kansas. I'm not one of them. I moved UMass up to 0

Swift lists UMass as a favorite

Melvin Swift, a power forward from Houston who attends the same high school that current Minuteman Clyde Santee did named the Minutemen as one of his finalists Tuesday on Twitter. Melvin Swift Jr. ‏@ThatBoySwift: "Such a blessing to announce the top colleges I'm considering are:  St.John SMU Baylor  UMass UCONN" Swift, a 6-foot-7 power forward, had originally committed to Xavier, but re-opened his recruiting. UMass is currently at its full scholarship total for next year meaning someone currently in the program would have to leave or someone expected to 0

UMass is ranked No. 24

For the first time since 1998, the University of Massachusetts is ranked. The Minutemen checked in at No. 24 of the Associated Press poll that came out Monday afternoon. A breakdown of the voting 43 voters put UMass in their respective top 25s. * Kevin Lyttle of the Austin American Statesman had the Minutemen highest at No. 15. * Three people had them 16th * One No. 17 vote * One No. 18 *Two No. 19s, * Five No. 20s * Four No. 21s including 0

Path to Postseason After Charleston

Welcome to another year of Path to Postseason: Using projected results (W,L, or ?) based on Jeff Sagarin's predictor from RPIforecast.com, I'll look at what UMass needs to do to reach postseason.  By postseason I mean any tournament happening after the conference tournaments are over - NCAA, NIT, CBI, CIT - I'm guessing a UMass team with a winning record gets a bid to one of those. UMass has 31 games on its schedule and at least one A-10 Tournament game. So a winning record means at 0

My Associated Press Top 25 ballot: I ranked UMass No. ...

I voted UMass No. 21. Let’s get that out of the way first. For some of you that’s the only reason you’re reading this so I won’t delay. I think this is my seventh or eighth season as a voter in the Associated Press top 25 including the last two in a row. This is the first time UMass has appeared on my ballot. Voting this time of year is difficult because there’s still a mix of conjecture and resume together. Both Houston and Arizona 0

C.J. Anderson on why he signed with UMass

Both UMass verbal commitments have signed their respective letters of intent. N.J. big man Rashaan Holloway tweeted that he had signed, while Memphis G/F C.J. Anderson's situation had been quiet, but Anderson confirmed Friday that he had signe. UMass compliance won't likely verify it until after the weekend. Anderson told me what made UMass is choice: “When I went up there for my official visit, they were a great team and they were helping me making sure I wasn’t nervous. You can tell they’re a 0

Some thoughts on the Coaches Vs. Cancer Tip-off

Spoiler alert: There's a better than 50 percent chance that some or all of this ends up in a column Monday night/Tuesday morning: This was a fun basketball event. I watched the first game and obviously the second one and left during the second half of game three. There were three competitive games well worth watching. I expected Olivier Hanlan to be a little better than he was. BU's guards are good. They'll be very good in the Patriot League. That said Northeastern squandered chances 0
