College basketball Week Guide: Nov. 17

Tipping off  If the ACC had it to do over again, would it still want BC? The football team has been O.K. Good in some years less so in others. Basketball has plummetted to a point where it's not even really competitive. The fact that Jim Christian was the best coach they could hire speaks volumes.  My Associated Press Top 25 Ballot   1. Recruit LuWane Pipkins at Mullins Center

LuWane Pipkins, the point guard from Chicago who committed to UMass over the summer, was in attendance with his father for the UMass-Siena game Friday night. He was impressed with what he saw. “I’m enjoying. It was everything I imagined the school would be. The fan base is good. The team is good. I’m enjoying it,” he said. “It’s beautiful. I can’t wait til I get here.” Pipkins said he’s signing his letter of intent at his school at a ceremony Monday at 1 p.m. 0

UMass holding out hope on Frohnapfel

Austin Whipple took all the first string snaps at practice Friday, but UMass is holding out hope that junior Blake Frohnapfel will be healthy enough to play in Tuesday's game at Akron. Frohnapfel suffered a bone bruise in Wednesday's win over Ball State. Frohnapfel, who is a graduate student at UMass after transferring from Marshall, has completed 137 of 241 passes for 3,345 yards and led the Mid-American Conference with 334.5 yards per game. He threw 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.  Whipple, who began his career 0

UMass gets a verbal from quarterback from Arizona

UMass got a verbal commitment Monday from James Sosinski a quarterback from Hamilton, Ariz. according to AZCentral.com. Sosinski, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound QB, didn't become a starter until this season. UMass is the only school to offer him a scholarship. Sosinski completed 128 of 199 passes for 1,888 yards and 20 touchdowns with six interceptions this season and has led Chandler Hamilton High School into the quarterfinals of the Arizona state tournament quarterfinals.  "I don't know a lot about UMass," his coach Steve Belles told AZCentral.com. "However, 0

UMass basketball's Path to Postseason

Well it's obviously really really early to do this. The computers have very little actual data to work with. Expect all of this data to vary wildly especially early on. But this gives us a baseline to start with. Check it out with appropriate grains of salt. To see what NCAA Selection committee members will have in front of them when considering UMass, click here. Using projected results (W,L, or ?) based on Jeff Sagarin's predictor from RPIforecast.com, I'll look at what UMass needs to 0

Bergantino suffers ankle injury; Kellogg otherwise pleased with UMass scrimmage

Derek Kellogg isn't allowed to give a score, a result for any stats from Saturday's closed scrimmage per (silly) NCAA rules. But here's what he could say. All quotes below are Kellogg: Tyler Begantino suffered an ankle injury early on. Kellogg thought he'd be out of practice "a couple days." Kellogg thought it was a "light ankle sprain." If he misses any time because of this or future injuries or foul trouble, Maxie Esho would be the center when Cady Lalanne was out of the 0

UMass can still be Dunkherst without Raphiael Putney

It's a matter of debate, who was Batman and who was Robin in UMass' dynamic dunking duo of Raphiael Putney and Maxie Esho over the past few season. Both spring-legged forward had SportsCenter top 10 dunks. I asked Esho if he was the king dunker by himself now that Putney was gone. I was trying to raise his competitive hackles and it worked. I asked him about the young dunkers on the roster.  "First. I was always the King Dunker," he said looking a bit offended 0

A UMass hoop eligibility update sort of

Malik Hines is not practicing with the UMass men's basketball team today. The NCAA only allows players to practice a certain number of times while their case is being reviewed and Hines has reached his number. It's worth noting that the NCAA freshman eligibility rules have changed some since last year and UMass can't comment on specifics related to their players because of privacy rules. So my understanding on Hines is that he could still be eligible. He could be ineligible to play, but would 0
