Friday Tipoff: Welcome to history Hunter family

Well that’s why we love the tournament. Bryce Drew, T.J. Sorrentine, Ali Farokmanesh and now R.J. Hunter. On a day that had a record five one-point games and 6,130,913 wrecked brackets, the best story belonged to the Hunter family. Ron Hunter has long been considered a great man. He doesn’t just raise or donate money he’s been an active worker for Samaritan’s Feet. His charity work donating shoes has overshadowed the fact that he also a pretty terrific coach. What’s he’s isn’t, is a good 0

Thursday Tipoff

Most Northeastern students weren’t alive the last time the Huskies were in the NCAA Tournament. Back then Jim Calhoun was a young coach on the rise and Reggie Lewis symbolized exciting potential not a sad tragedy. Since then countless students spent their five years on Huntington Avenue never seeing their name on a bracket. BU, Harvard, Boston College, UMass and Holy Cross all were in and out of the field while the Huskies couldn’t quite get the job done in the North Atlantic Conference, America 0

TD Garden college basketball tripleheader off in 2015

The annual Bay State basketball tripleheader and subsequent UMass-Boston College game are off for 2015. Jason Beckett, vice president of operations for Boston’s TD Garden, which hosted the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic the past two seasons, confirmed the event will not be held in 2015. “It’s off for this year,” Beckett said. “Things didn’t line up for the schools involved.” He said the Garden would be interested in revisiting the event in future years. “Honestly I think the schools are too. It just didn’t 0

Wednesday Tipoff: Fordham fires yet another basketball coach

Fordham is starting again. Again. There’s is a theory that good athletic directors fire coaches they don’t want a year before the team is about to get good enough that you can’t fire the coach. It allows the new guy to step in, experience success and look like the savior of the program. It’s a good idea when it works. At the end of the season Fordham looked like it was ready to take a significant step forward. Eric Paschall was the rookie of the 0

Tipoff Tuesday

I’m wondering if the flap about Dayton playing at Dayton might end First Four games being played at UD Arena. I think they should be annually rotated among legendary gyms. Cameron Indoor, The Palestra. The Pit, Allen Fieldhouse, Tom Gola Arena (just kidding) etc. Links John Feinstein has a suggestion on how to fix the NCAA selection committee. Some of it I agree with. Some of it makes him sound like a grouchy old man. The Washington Post did emoji for each team in the 0

Tipoff Monday:

I’ll have a full picks column later in the week. But a few bracket thoughts: * If I’m a No. 6 seed I’d much rather face a set opponent than the winner of a play-in game. * Eastern Washington had to be celebrating when they saw Georgetown, who becomes the Washington Generals against double-digit seeds. * I’d be stunned if Villanova makes the Final Four, but that whole region has warts. Would be a better field if Villanova and Wisconsin switched places * Notre Dame, 0

UMass’ Frank Vatrano signs free agent contract with Boston Bruins

The optimism created by a strong finish to the 2014-15 season for the UMass hockey team suffered a bit of a blow on Thursday. Sophomore Frank Vatrano, the Minutemen’s top goal scorer, signed a free agent contract with the Boston Bruins, giving up his final two years of eligibility. “I wasn’t expecting too much at the end of the season, but the opportunity came across,” Vatrano said. “It was something I discussed with my family and thought it would be a good more for me.” 0

UMass 2015 Football Schedule

AMHERST — After a 2014 season that featured games on almost every day of the week, UMass’ final season in the Mid-American Conference will feature a slate of games almost exclusively on Saturday. On the schedule that was released Friday afternoon, the Minutemen have just one weekday game, their regular season finale vs. Buffalo on Friday Nov. 27. None of the kickoff times or TV carriers have been announced yet. The Minutemen have their bye week on Sept. 5, the opening week of the season for most 0
