UMass’ best men's basketball recruiting classes of the modern era

It is too early… WAY too early... to be thinking about where UMass’ De’Jon Jarreau, Brison Gresham, Chris Baldwin and Unique McLean fit among UMass’ all-time recruiting classes. For one thing, there could and likely will be at least one more player added. On top of that none of these guys have played a game or even signed yet. There could be injures and who knows what else. But on paper it’s really good. UMass has had one four-star since Calipari, Terrell Vinson. All three 0

Better, more mature Chris Baldwin commits to UMass

According to his high school and AAU coaches, the Chris Baldwin that will be coming back to western Massachusetts next year is a much more mature and polished product than the one who left a year ago. Improved maturity and a commitment to working hard helped turn the Springfield native into a highly sought-after Division I power forward. Baldwin, who played at Springfield’s Central High School before transferring to Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, committed to UMass on Tuesday. His commitment continued a memorable recruiting 0

UMass lands two potentially program-changing recruits

The UMass men’s basketball team had its biggest recruiting day in years Monday as New Orleans natives Brison Gresham and De’Jon Jarreau both announced their decision to become Minutemen. Shortly after the press conference Jarreau tweeted: "I'm proud to announce that I will be continuing my college career at the University Of Massachusetts!" with a picture of him in a white UMass uniform taken in the school's new practice facility on his visit Greshman followed shortly with this tweet: "We have decided to verbally commit 0

Using ESPN's FPI to project UMass' chances of going from 0-3 to bowl eligible

UMass needs six wins to be bowl eligible for the first time. Eligible doesn't equal an invitation as the MAC only has five certain bowl slots. but it's our starting point for now. Projected results Using ESPN's Football Power Index I'll look at the prognosis for each game. If ESPN gives UMass a 60 percent chance of winning of better, it'll be a W. 40 percent or less is an L. If it's 41-59, that's a ?. Since UMass hasn't played yet, the numbers are 0

MAC Survivor: A lot of hopes riding on Eastern Michigan over Army

It’s a potential program-lifting time for UMass basketball with key recruits on campus

Before the new practice facility had walls or windows or any of the other bells and whistles were in place, UMass coach Derek Kellogg looked at the construction excitedly. College athletics is an arms race and he thought the new building which would house new practice courts, office space, locker rooms and other amenities for the players would help take his recruiting to a higher plane. The Minutemen are hosting two players for an official visit this weekend that could fulfill those hopes in a 0

Larry Franklin leaves UMass football team

Larry Franklin, a senior linebacker/safety, who transferred to UMass from Vanderbilt right before the start of preseason, has left the team for personal reasons. He’s been removed from the roster and isn’t expected to return. The 6-foot-1, 214-pound Vero Beach, Fla. native made two sacks in UMass’ loss at Colorado and didn’t play Saturday vs. Temple. The Minuteman coaching staff had hoped he's been a significant contributor. He left the Vanderbilt football team for unknown reasons before the start of spring practice in 2014. He 0
