Yet another Western Massachusetts honor for John Calipari

If former UMass men's basketball coach John Calipari is coming to Western Massachusetts in the next 12 months somebody is going to honor him for something. In addition to being inducted to the Naismith Hall of Fame in September and having a numberless jersey retired by the Minutemen in his honor at a date to be determined, UMass announced another honor coming his way. Excerpted from From the UMass press release: UMass Amherst to Bestow Honors at Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony on May 8 AMHERST, Mass. 0

UMass lands Texas A&M transfer big man Antwan Space

Antwan Space was optimistic about UMass before he arrived for his visit. The big man, who is transferring from Texas A&M, said his time in Amherst and on campus sealed his decision to commit to the Minutemen. Space is taking advantage of the NCAA’s graduate transfer rule that allows players, who have completed their degrees, to play at their new school without sitting out. The 6-foot-8, 229-pound forward/center will have one year of eligibility remaining. “Visiting showed me the town of Amherst and how nice 0

Former UMass coach John Calipari is officially a Hall of Famer

As was leaked yesterday, former UMass coach John Calipari was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield: From Kentucky’s web site: Calipari’s credentials are certainly Hall of Fame worthy. In his 23 seasons as a college head coach, he’s guided six teams to the Final Four, including four over the last five years, becoming one of just three coaches (John Wooden and Mike Krzyzewski) to achieve that feat. He’s led one team to a national championship and produced 30 NBA Draft picks, 0

Could an Atlantic 10 All-Star team upset Kentucky?

How would an Atlantic 10 all-star team do against Kentucky? Thrown together right now, it would almost certainly lose. But given adequate time to prepare and establish roles, how would they fare? Let’s establish a few things first: 1. Davidson’s Bob McKillop is the coach. A. He’s a terrific coach. B. He was coach of the year. C. Shaka Smart just left making the decision that much easier. 2. Briante Weber isn’t eligible. While this game isn’t actually happening of course, I’m trying to present 0

The entire Atlantic 10 will miss having Shaka Smart at VCU

There will be a tendency for fans of Atlantic 10 teams to look at Shaka Smart’s departure from VCU to Texas as an opportunity. If the best school in the conference loses its coach, there’s an opportunity for somebody else to move up if VCU falls back. That’s both true and short-sighted. College basketball is fueled by its coaches. With the massive annual turnover in rosters, it’s the coaches that are the game’s enduring characters. Winning is the most important thing, but winning and being 0

Celebrating Lari Ketner’s Atlantic 10 honor

Editor's Note: Aquarius Ketner, wife of late UMass basketball star Lari Ketner graciously agreed to share her experiences from the Atlantic 10 Legends celebration at the tournament earlier this month. BROOKLYN — Attending the Atlantic 10 Legends celebration on behalf of my late husband, Lari A. Ketner, was a beautiful experience. Being able to celebrate his contributions, not just to UMass, but to Atlantic 10 men’s basketball, gave me a feeling a pride. Although I had moments of sadness because Lari could not be there 0

Friday Tipoff - Kentucky looking unbeatable

I don’t watch a lot of women’s college basketball. I have nothing against it, but there’s only so much TV I can watch from October to April, but one thing that has stood out of me over the years is how rarely there are huge upsets in the NCAA Tournament. No. 1 seeds not only lose rarely, but they’re almost never challenged. The top teams are dominant. Last night’s Kentucky vs. West Virginia had that kind of feel to it from the beginning. Before you 0

Thursday Tipoff - No Atlantic 10 teams, plenty of A-10 ties

There are no Atlantic 10 teams in the Sweet Sixteen, but there’ll be no lack of ties to the conference when play begins: Arizona point guard T.J. McConnell (see links below) started his career at Duquesne Arizona coach Sean Miller is the former coach of Xavier and the brother of Dayton coach Archie Miller Xavier used to be in the A-10 West Virgina guard Juwan Staten is a Dayton transfer West Virginia assistant coach Ron Everhart was the head coach at Duquesne Former St. Bonaventure 0

UMass officially makes Ryan Bamford new athletic director

UMass has made Ryan Bamford’s hire official. The school officially announced the move Monday. It will introduce him as UMass’ seventh athletic director at a 2 p.m. press conference Tuesday at the Football Performance Center. Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy and Bamford both released statements through UMass: “Ryan brings the right mix of devotion to the student-athlete, a winning tradition in a broad range of sports, and intimate knowledge of FBS football---just what we were looking for,” said Subbaswamy. “He brings great energy to our department of 0

Sunday Tipoff: Potential classic Sunday on tap

The only saving grace of Friday’s insomnia-curing snoozefest is that it sets up some great heavyweight match-ups today. Hall of Famers Krzyzewski and Pitino are in action. Nominee Bo Ryan is in action. Future Hall of Famers Tom Izzo and Bill Self are in action and perhaps someday Hall of Famers, Mark Few, Tony Bennett and Gregg Marshall are in action. Fearless Pick: Wichita over Kansas Today’s games: Michigan State vs. Virginia, 12:10 San Diego State vs. Duke, 2:40 Wichita State vs. Kansas, 5:15, Dayton 0
