UMass 3 Stars - Game 1 Howard

I brought back 3 Stars. After each UMass game, I’ll pick the Minutemen’s three best/most important players from each game and track them over the course of the season. A No. 1 star is worth five points. A No. 2 is worth three and a No. 3 is worth one. 1. UMass vs. Howard No. 1 Star Jabarie Hinds — A year ago, the West Virgina transfer looked really good at times and lost at others. He was terrific, Saturday. Both on offense and defense, 0

Luwane Pipkins is officially sitting out the 2015-16 season for UMass

UMass freshman guard Luwane Pipkins will sit out the 2015-16 season as an academic nonqualifier. On Monday, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said he expected that would be how the NCAA ruled. As long as he makes required progress toward his degree, Pipkins will have four years of eligibility beginning in the 2016-17 season. If he gets a 2.5 grade point average he’ll be eligible to practice with the team after the first semester. Because Pipkins hasn’t been practicing with the Minutemen throughout the preseason, UMass 0

Bruins call up former Minuteman Frank Vatrano

Former UMass forward Frank Vatrano’s torrid start in Providence earned the East Longmeadow native a chance to make his NHL debut. The Boston Bruins summoned him from Providence, Friday. He could be in uniform as soon as Saturday at Montreal. Vatrano was leading the AHL with 10 goals in 10 games. He replaces Alex Khokhlachev, who was sent down to Providence. Vatrano is one of three former Minutemen currently in the NHL joining Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick and San Jose defenseman Justin Braun. 0

UMass picked 10th in Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — UMass’ recent run on being picked among the favorites in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll came to an end Tuesday. The Minutemen were picked 10th out of 14 teams and didn’t have a single player among the 15 preseason all-conference players or five all-defensive players. The ranking wasn’t unexpected. It was similar to where most of the preseason preview magazines had ranked the Minutemen. “Obviously nobody wants to be picked 10th, but by the same token, with the turnover we had with Cady (Lalanne) being 0

Using ESPN's FPI to project UMass' chances of going from 1-3 to bowl eligible

UMass needs six wins to be bowl eligible for the first time. Eligible doesn't equal an invitation as the MAC only has five certain bowl slots. but it's our starting point for now. Projected results Using ESPN's Football Power Index I'll look at the prognosis for each game. If ESPN gives UMass a 60 percent chance of winning of better, it'll be a W. 40 percent or less is an L. If it's 41-59, that's a ?. Oct. 10 – at Bowling Green – L 0
