Canisius guard Zach Lewis excited to transfer to UMass

Going into the offseason, UMass coach Derek Kellogg hoped to add two transfers — an immediately eligible big man and a younger guard for 2016-17. On Tuesday he completed the checklist when Canisius guard Zach Lewis announced he was transferring to UMass. Lewis joins former Texas A&M big man Antwan Space among the Minutemen’s spring additions. Lewis, a 6-foot-3 wing from just over the Connecticut border in Windsor, confirmed an ESPN report that he’d picked UMass.. “It was really a perfect fit. The campus was 0

UMass TE Jean Sifrin not selected in NFL draft; Signs with Indianapolis Colts as a free agent

If Jean Sifrin’s unusual career is going to finish in the NFL, he’s going to get there as an undrafted free agent. The former UMass tight end, who skipped his senior year to turn pro wasn’t taken in the draft’s seven rounds. Whether it was his age, he’ll be 28 when the season starts, or his unwhelming performance at the NFL combine, Sifrin wasn’t among the 19 tight ends taken. According to numerous online reports, Sifrin signed with the Indianapolis Colts shortly after the draft. 0

UMass’ Matt Sparks rooting for his high school rival Marcus Mariota

Matt Sparks’ in-person memories of Marcus Mariota aren’t happy ones. Before Sparks was anchoring the UMass offensive line and Mariota was putting together a Heisman winning career at Oregon that would make him the No. 2 overall pick by the Tennessee Titans in Thursday's NFL draft, they were on opposite sides on one of Hawaii’s better high school football matchups. In 2010, Mariota’s senior year at St. Louis and Sparks’ junior season at Punahou, Sparks got two up close looks at Mariota’s star potential as 0

UMass guard Demetrius Dyson announces his plans to transfer

On a weekend where the UMass men’s basketball team hoped Marcquise Reed would become a future Minuteman, sophomore Demetrius Dyson became a former one. Dyson announced via Twitter (and TwitLonger, which extends tweets beyond 140 characters) Saturday night that he plans to complete his college career elsewhere, confirming an ESPN report by Jeff Goodman: “I want to thank @UMass_Bball, my teammates, the fans, and the entire coaching staff for 2 great memorable years, but I’ve decided to take my talents elsewhere next year.” Dyson is the second UMass 0

Yet another Western Massachusetts honor for John Calipari

If former UMass men's basketball coach John Calipari is coming to Western Massachusetts in the next 12 months somebody is going to honor him for something. In addition to being inducted to the Naismith Hall of Fame in September and having a numberless jersey retired by the Minutemen in his honor at a date to be determined, UMass announced another honor coming his way. Excerpted from From the UMass press release: UMass Amherst to Bestow Honors at Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony on May 8 AMHERST, Mass. 0

UMass lands Texas A&M transfer big man Antwan Space

Antwan Space was optimistic about UMass before he arrived for his visit. The big man, who is transferring from Texas A&M, said his time in Amherst and on campus sealed his decision to commit to the Minutemen. Space is taking advantage of the NCAA’s graduate transfer rule that allows players, who have completed their degrees, to play at their new school without sitting out. The 6-foot-8, 229-pound forward/center will have one year of eligibility remaining. “Visiting showed me the town of Amherst and how nice 0

Former UMass coach John Calipari is officially a Hall of Famer

As was leaked yesterday, former UMass coach John Calipari was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield: From Kentucky’s web site: Calipari’s credentials are certainly Hall of Fame worthy. In his 23 seasons as a college head coach, he’s guided six teams to the Final Four, including four over the last five years, becoming one of just three coaches (John Wooden and Mike Krzyzewski) to achieve that feat. He’s led one team to a national championship and produced 30 NBA Draft picks, 0

Could an Atlantic 10 All-Star team upset Kentucky?

How would an Atlantic 10 all-star team do against Kentucky? Thrown together right now, it would almost certainly lose. But given adequate time to prepare and establish roles, how would they fare? Let’s establish a few things first: 1. Davidson’s Bob McKillop is the coach. A. He’s a terrific coach. B. He was coach of the year. C. Shaka Smart just left making the decision that much easier. 2. Briante Weber isn’t eligible. While this game isn’t actually happening of course, I’m trying to present 0

The entire Atlantic 10 will miss having Shaka Smart at VCU

There will be a tendency for fans of Atlantic 10 teams to look at Shaka Smart’s departure from VCU to Texas as an opportunity. If the best school in the conference loses its coach, there’s an opportunity for somebody else to move up if VCU falls back. That’s both true and short-sighted. College basketball is fueled by its coaches. With the massive annual turnover in rosters, it’s the coaches that are the game’s enduring characters. Winning is the most important thing, but winning and being 0

Celebrating Lari Ketner’s Atlantic 10 honor

Editor's Note: Aquarius Ketner, wife of late UMass basketball star Lari Ketner graciously agreed to share her experiences from the Atlantic 10 Legends celebration at the tournament earlier this month. BROOKLYN — Attending the Atlantic 10 Legends celebration on behalf of my late husband, Lari A. Ketner, was a beautiful experience. Being able to celebrate his contributions, not just to UMass, but to Atlantic 10 men’s basketball, gave me a feeling a pride. Although I had moments of sadness because Lari could not be there 0
