True freshman A.J. Doyle will start at quarterback in UMass' Friday finale vs. Central Michigan
True freshman quarterback A.J. Doyle will make his first collegiate start in the Univeristy of Massachusetts football team's final regular season game Friday against Central Michigan (3 p.m. Gillette Stadium).
UMass coach Charley Molnar and Doyle are expected to talk about the move after today's practice.
Redshirt freshman Mike Wegzyn started the first 11 games with inconsistent results. He completed 182 of 346 passes for 1,825 yards He threw six touchdown passes and was intercepted 10 times.
Doyle played in seven games, mostly with the score out of reach. He was 26-of-53 for 66 yards. He threw one touchdown and was intercepted five times.
UMass is expected to begin an open competition to start in 2013 during spring practice.
