You say it's your birthday? Get ready for goodies
I celebrated my birthday last week by going to see "Argo," which was terrific, and by indulging in a bag of decadent movie-theater popcorn. Even better? The popcorn was free, thanks to a coupon in a Happy Birthday email from Cinemark.
Cinemark's newsletter is just one of many email lists I've signed up for (I get advance notice of new movies, and a concession deal of the week). And because when I registered for all those lists I shared my date of birth - which isn't a secret, given the availability of public records these days - I raked in all sorts of birthday deals last week.
Some arrived in the mail: postcards for $10 off at Strada shoes and a 20 percent discount at Different Drummer's Kitchen, both in Northampton. But most came via email, from AC Moore, the Disney Movie Club, Omni hotels, Origins, Sears, World Market and more. My favorite, though, was the super-salty, super-buttery popcorn from Cinemark - a once a year (if I know what's good for me) treat.
