Where Are They Now: Kathy Coyner

Installment No. 4 of our summer "Where Are They Now" is standout point guard Kathy Coyner.

                  Kathy Coyner then and now

Anyone that saw her play knew Kathy Coyner had a high hoop IQ. But she's put her brain to even better use off the court. UMass' former standout point guard is now a surgeon and the latest addition to the summer's "Where Are They Now?" feature on this blog.

NOW

What do you do for a career? I am an orthopaedic surgeon practicing sports medicine.
After UMass, I went to medical school in Ohio at Northeastern Universities College of Medicine then did five-year orthopaedic surgery residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich., and then did a one-year sports medicine fellowship at Duke University, where I helped take care of women's soccer, football, men's & women's basketball and North Carolina Central University's football teams.
I just took a job at UT Southwestern in Dallas as a sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon and will start Sept. 1st

Where do you live now? Durham, NC

Married? Single, no children, but I do have 3 nieces & 3 nephews

Last time you visited Amherst: I came to a women's game two years ago when I was in town interviewing at UMass medical for a fellowship

Do you still play at all? I play infrequently. Last time I played was in a Duke co-ed intramural league and we won the championship in Cameron Indoor.

Do you still follow UMass sports? I still have regular contact with Katie Lenois who was and still is the women's basketball secretary, so I do get updates and keep up them through other people's Facebook posts.
I have seen Nekole Smith on a regular basis as she was also living in Michigan, and recently saw Jawana Bradley when her AAU team was playing at Duke. There are lots of others that I keep up with through Facebook.
