Week Guide - Feb. 20
LEADING OFF
This is an abbreviated week guide, cause I have to go to an early practice.
GAMES OF THE DAY:
MONDAY: Baylor at Texas - The Bears are the better team, but any time they can knock off the Longhorns, it's a big day for them in a state where they have to scrape and claw for attention. Texas is still trying to get into the tournament and a win here would be a huge lift
TUESDAY: New Mexico at Colorado State - The Rams are much better at home and they're trying to put themselves back into NCAA consideration .
WEDNESDAY: West Virginia at Notre Dame - Mountaineers are trying to shore up a bid. Irish trying to improve their seed.
THURSDAY: - Duke at Florida State
Murrary State at Tennessee State
BYU at Gonzaga
FRIDAY: Princeton at Harvard - Crimson can pay back the only Ivy team to beat them. .
SATURDAY: Missouri at Kansas - Last regular season meeting at conference foes.
SUNDAY: Wisconsin at Ohio State
UNDEFEATED: Nobody
WINLESS: Binghamton
UMASS PATH TO POSTSEASON
With projected results (W,L, or ?) are based on Jeff Sagarin's predictor from RPI forcast.com
By postseason I mean any tournament happening after the conference tournaments are over - NCAA, NIT, CBI, CIT - I'm guessing a UMass teams with a winning record gets a bid to one of those.
UMass has 29 games on its schedule and at least one A-10 Tournament game (I'm aware that two A-10 teams won't make the tournament, but if this execise is going to be relevant, UMass has to be good enough to make the A-10 Tournament). So a winning record means at least 16 wins.
Currently: 18-8
WINS: Elon, Northeastern, NJIT, BC, Utah, Towson, ECU, Siena, Quinnipiac,, Davdison, CCSU, Fordham, Charlotte, Saint Joseph's, Richmond, SLU, GW, St. Bona,
LOSSES: FSU, Charleston, Miami, La Salle (2), Duquesne, URI, St. Joe's,
BEST POTENTIAL RECORD HEADING INTO A-10: 22-8
WORST POTENTIAL RECORD HEADING INTO A-10: 18-12
Date - Opponent - (Expected according to Jeff Sagarin's Predictor. A ? is anything game where UMass is given a 40-60 percent chance of winning)
Feb. 21 vs. Xavier, (?)
Feb. 25 at Dayton, (L)
Feb. 29 at Temple, (L)
Mar. 3 vs. Rhode Island, (W)
Prognosis:
One projected (W) win . Two projected (L) and One (?). A winning season has been clinched already. I think UMass is likely already in the CBI or CIT. Two wins I think gets UMass to at least the NIT.
Question I don't know the answer to: How many Mountain West teams will be in the Sweet 16? Two? Three?
BUZZER BEATERS
Bad day for referee Karl Hess on Saturday. He looks far worse for kicking Tom Gugliotta and Chris Corchianni out of the game than they do for getting booted.
... 1 day til UMass-X...
