Whipple hired as Cleveland Browns' QB coach

The Cleveland Browns hired former UMass coach Mark Whipple as their quarterbacks coach. The Browns won't hae an offensive coordinator as head coach Pat Shurmur will call the plays.

Whipple at UConn sounds odd doesn't it?

It's weird to think of Mark Whipple on the UConn sideline. The former Minuteman coach delighted in ending UConn's tenure in Division I-AA with a 62-20 whipping.

But by the end of the week Whipple could be the head Husky as he's emerged as the leader for UMass' former rival's opening. He could be leading UConn when the Minutemen play the Huskies in 2012.

Whipple has come close to being a FBS/I-A head coach before. He was a finalist at Rutgers and appeared to have the job at Boston College before negotiations fell apart.

Spencer Whipple in action for Miami

Former UMass quarterback Spencer Whipple is in the game for Miami. Whipple, the son of former UMass coach Mark Whipple, Miami's offensive coordinator entered the game when starter Jacory Harris was knocked out.

He's already thrown an interception. Miami is down 14-0.

This game has all sorts of UMass connection. Virginia's defensive coordinator is former UMass coach Jim Reid. The Cavaliers' head coach is Mike London, whose son Brandon London played at UMass.

Whipple on the move?

Former UMass football coach Mark Whipple is a candidate to be offensive coordinator at USC and with the Chicago Bears:

From the Miami Herald:

Southern California contacted UM offensive coordinator Mark Whipple
about the same job at USC, and an NFL team also has interest in him for
an assistant's post. But UM remains optimistic Whipple will stay until
he gets a head coaching job. . . . Two people briefed on Randy Shannon's
contract-extension talks said that one issue taking a while to hash out
is the amount he would get if UM buys him out midway through, or late,
in a long-term contract.

From the Chicago Tribune:

One of the reasons the search has been so slow is the Bears have
intended to talk with coaches who currently work for colleges. Before
national signing day Wednesday, colleges don't want it known coaches
might be leaving.

But several names have emerged, such as Alabama offensive coordinator
Jim McElwain and Miami offensive coordinator Mark Whipple.

Whippleball?

Do you think Boston College regrets not hiring Mark Whipple? Whipple has been terrific so far as the offensive coordinator at Miami and it's fair to say the Jeff Jagodzinski, the man BC hired instead of Whipple didn't quite work out like they'd hoped.

ESPN's Ivan Maisel has a good look at Whippleball.

Links: Stories on Whipple, Palmieri

The Miami Herald has a story on former UMass coach Mark Whipple. In it there's a funny coincidence that Whipple's younger son Austin is now playing at St. Thomas Aquinas, the Ft. Lauderdale High School that he recruited quite a few players from, including Adrian Zullo.

The Salem News has a look at UMass softball player Tawny Palmieri.

Whipple to become offensive coordinator at Miami

Former Minuteman coach Mark Whipple will join former Minuteman coach Don Brown in the ACC as Whipple is expected to be hired as the offensive coordinator of the Miami Hurricanes.

Miami and Maryland aren't scheduled to play in 2009.

Mostly unrelated, Whipple wouldn't pick the Super Bowl winner.

London out, Whipple still alive

Brandon London's Miami Dolphins got bounced, but Mark Whipple's Eagles are still alive.

Whip is mentioned positively here.

With all the NFL turnover, it'll be interesting to see if Whip stays put or ends up as an offensive coordinator somewhere.
