Three stars II - Cornell and some observations after UMass' 74-61 loss.

Like I did during football season, for every UMass men's basketball game this season, I'll be giving out three stars to the top three performers from the Minutemen and keeping track of who earns the most three start points over the course of the season.

I'm putting a little extra weight on No. 1. So a No. 1 star is worth 5 points. A No. 2 is worth three and a No. 3 is worth 2.

Three Stars from UMass vs. Central Florida

Not a great game to choose stars from as the Minutemen struggled.

No. 1 - Terrell Vinson - The freshman looked much more confident with 11 points and four rebounds.

No. 2 - Ricky Harris  - He wasn't terrific, but he had 26 points against a defense designed to stop him.

No. 3 - Anthony Gurley - Took good shots. Made 5-of-7 free throws.

Season-to-date points:

Terrell Vinson - 5
Freddie Riley - 5
Anthony Gurley - 4
Ricky Harris - 3
Javorn Farrell - 2

Game updates are at http://twitter.com/GazetteUMass.

UMass looked better than it did against Central Florida.

The defense still needs work, but had moments where the players seemed to get it a little better.

If David Gibbs or Gary Correia doesn't get better UMass is going to continue to struggle offensively. I think Kellogg did the right thing cutting Doug Wiggins loose, but the Minutemen could use him.

Vinson looked pretty good. I have a feeling he'll be playing closer to the basket as the season continues. Against a smaller team, he could have some big nights inside.

Still no Putney, which leads me to believe a redshirt is till very possible.

UMass needs some offense from Sean Carter.

No. 2 - Eric Dickson  -Fourteen tackles for the underhyped senior linebacker.No. 3. - ??????- Did anyone else really standout. I'd say Ke'Mon Bailey for his two-point PAT return, but he was burned on a TD earlier so It's hard to put him here. Season to date points:

No. 1 - Tyler Holmes  - The sophomore standout made 17 tackles in the loss including four behind the line of scrimmage.

No. 2 - Eric Dickson  -Ten tackles for the underhyped senior linebacker.

No. 3. - Jeremy Horne - The senior wide receiver had just two catches for 22 yards. But on the last play of the game, he sprinted to catch Michael Ireland just before the goal line to prevent an extra Richmond touchdown. The game was over, the weather was lousy. He could have just let Ireland go and very little changes. Instead he goes all out making a statement about his own character. It's worth at least a No. 3 star.

Three Stars V - New Hampshire

For every UMass game this season, I'll be giving out three stars to the
top three performers from the Minutemen and keeping track of who earns
the most three start points over the course of the season.

I'm putting a little extra weight on No. 1. So a No. 1 star is worth 5 points. A No. 2 is worth three and a No. 3 is worth 2.

Three Stars from UMass vs. New Hampshire

Oddly enough the three starts were more obvious against Delaware

No. 1 - Jonthan Hernandez - Again in relief of Tony Nelson, the Leominster High School grad had 166 yards on 29 carries and a big 4-yard fourth quarter touchdown that gave UMass control.

No. 2 - Eric Dickson  - I pondered this for a few moments because he did get beat on the UNH first TD, but he was good after that and 18 tackles is 18 tackles.

Several candidates for No. 3... Darren Thellen played pretty well in place of Jeromy Miles. Victor Cruz and Emil Igwenagu were both solid receiving. Kumar Davis had the game clinching pick making him an honorary Hatchell without the knee woes. I even thought of giving it to Kevin Morris for leading the Juvenile Diabetes Walk today. But I'm going with:

No. 3. - Armando Cuko - Three more field goals for the nation's leader including a big 41-yarder late that forced UNH to play for a TD in the final minute.

Season to date points:

Victor Cruz-10
Jonathan Hernandez - 10
Ke'Mon Bailey - 5

Three Stars- Kansas State

Credit where credit is due. I'm borrowing this concept from:
A. The NHL
B. Jon Couture's excellent Better Red than Dead Red Sox blog at the New
Bedford Standard Times. My version is different than Couture's, but his
inspired mine.

For every UMass game this season, I'll be giving out three stars to the top
three performers from the Minutemen and keeping track of who earns the most three start points over the course of the season.

I'm putting a little extra weight on No. 1. So a No. 1 star is worth 5 points. A No. 2 is worth three and a No. 1 is worth 2.

Three Stars from UMass vs. Kansas State

No. 1 - Ke'mon Bailey
- Cornerback was a huge position of concern for the Minutemen coming in and Bailey, a converted wide receiver was terrific with six tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. His play should make the Minutemen much more optimistic going forward.

No. 2 - Tyler Holmes - If there is a candidate to go from unknown to all-league for UMass, Holmes might be the guy. His 12 tackles could be a sign of things to come.

No. 3. - Tony Nelson - Against a Big XII defense geared up to stop him, Nelson rushed for 107 yards.

Tyler Holmes - 3
