Former Minuteman Tony Gaffney is trying out for the Denver Nuggets this week. The same Nuggets made his former, and perhaps future, teammate Gary Forbes a contract offer Monday.

If NFL labor talk wasn't giving you your fill of legal fun, the NBA appears ready to follow suit as rumors of a basketball lockout continue to gather steam.
If the NY Daily News is right, the NBA Las Vegas summer league won't be happening this year. The league is usually a chance for rookies to prepare for their first season, while players who were undrafted, or played int eh D-League or overseas can use the league as a chance to get an invitation to somebody's camp. This helped earn Gary Forbes a job last year. Without a summer league there'll be fewer chances for someone to crack a roster.
If there is a work stoppage, even a short one, that postpones the start of the 2011-12 season. It's likely that NBA will have shorter training camps. Players with NBA experience will be safer invites to people camp. For someone like Gary Forbes, who'll be a free agent after the season, this is a good thing.
For someone like Tony Gaffney, who played this season in the D-League, or Anthony Gurley, who isn't expected to be drafted, there is less chance of becoming the next Gary Forbes.

According to Tony Gaffney's facebook status, he's been cut by the Celtics. He took the classy approach on the way out:

"All

celtics, it ended today. I appreciate all the love n support. You guys
are the best. My agent is back to the drawing board and stirring up

Former Minuteman Tony Gaffney may have to back off those "Laker fan for life" comments he made last year. After nearly making the rival of the team he grew up rooting for, Gaffney is going to play, or at least sign with the team, he grew up rooting for.
The former Minuteman is expectedto sign with the Boston Celtics today and will likely catch a flight to Chicago for tonight's game. The Celtics final regular season game is tomorrow (home vs. Milwaukee, 8 p.m.). Several sites are reporting the signing that will likely include a non-guaranteed contract for next year.

The Lakers released Thomas Kelati, one of their other players whithout a guaranteed contract.
This may not actually help Gaffney at all, but few people thought they'd keep Gaffney and Kelati so this can't hurt his chances of making the Lakers.
My question is: What happens if the Lakers offer to sign him with the intention of allocating Gaffney to their D-League team, which is also in Los Angeles. Does he take that deal or go to Israel, where he has a fallback contract?

Gaffney checked in with a text saying the Israel deal is in case Lakers doesn't work out.
This is pretty common for American players without a guaranteed NBA contract.

According to an Israeli web site, former Minuteman big man Tony Gaffney has signed to play in Israel:
Gaffney Lands in Gilboa

Tony Gaffney, who was ranked third in the NCAA last season with 3.8 blocks
per evening, signed today with Hapoel Galil/Gilboa for next season.
Tony Gaffney (24, 2.04 m), who just graduated from the University of
Massachusetts, signed today with Hapoel Galil/Gilboa for next season.
He joins Gonzaga's Jeremy Pargo who signed during the weekend and Isiah
Swann and Dion Dowell who continue from last year.
Gaffney transferred to Umass from the University of Boston, and
played for the Minutemen in the last two years. As a senior he averaged
11.5 points, 10.2 rebounds (17th in the NCAA), 1.7 assists, 2.0 steals
and 3.8 blocks, which ranked him third in the nation!
The Boston-born forward had 12 double-doubles and 30 games, and was
one block short (15 pts, 18 rebs) from setting a rare triple double
against Boston College. He was named Atlantic-10 defensive player of
the year.
After going undrafted, Gaffney played for the world champions LA
Lakers in the NBA's summer league, where he averaged 3.8 points and 2.8
boards in 16 minutes per game.
I'm not sure if this deal is in case he doesn't make the Lakers or if it knocks him out of Lakers camp. I have a few calls out. Updates here when I get them.

I think Gary Forbes and Tony Gaffney might talk tonight as Forbes, who went undrafted last year can relate to what I'm sure is frustration for Gaffney tonight.

All right I'm back from my honeymoon and ready to blog.
While I was out of the country Tony Gaffney's draft stock seemed to take off considerably and he seems to have a decent shot of getting selected.
I spoke to Tony briefly this afternoon and he seemed excited and content. He felt like he'd done all he could do to help himself and was proud of his effort, but at the same time he was ready for the draft to start to end the suspense.
I have to say it would be an amazing story if he was taken and truly an inspirtational one. When Gaffney arrived at UMass, I looked at his BU numbers and never thought he'd be anything more than a role player and I think Travis Ford may have felt the same way. Instead he shined.
It would finish the story on a fun note if he got drafted.
Here's the link to IMG's blog on his pre-draft progress.
