Girls Hoop Playoff Picture

NOTE: Apparently, fate just didn't want me to post a Top 25 last week or the Week Guide this week as things just kept getting in the way both at home and in the office. I don't expect that to happen again for the rest of the season. ... To make amends, I offer the first Playoff Picture of the season, with breakdowns of who is in, who is out and just what the bubble teams are looking at. ... There are some teams listed as "Out" that may be mathematically still alive via a second-place finish. Unless the teams appear likely to be in that position, I kept them in the "Out" category for now. ... It appears there are some teams that have a habit of not reporting their score to the Replublican when they lose at home, so that's become a bit of a challenge here. Also, there is certainly the potential for mistakes, so if you see anything please email me at jpignatiello@gazettenet.com. ... See you Thursday night for the updated Top 25.

DIVISION 1

Clinched
Amherst, East Longmeadow, Holyoke, Pittsfield, West Springfield

On the bubble:
Agawam (6-9) - They'd have to beat either Amherst or Longmeadow in order to get in. The good news is both games are in Agawam, but that's still a tough order.
Central (9-7) - No easy ones left, but they only need one from West Side, Ludlow, Minnechaug and Northampton. They beat Ludlow by four, Minnechaug by three and Northampton by two the last time around.
Longmeadow (8-7) - The Lancers are a virtual lock to get in after going 4-1 the first time through the league and with one more swing through all five teams remaining.
Ludlow (7-9) - Lions are a good team that could suffer from being a member of the power conference. Three wins isn't completely out of the question, but the squad is 3-1 against Central, Minnechaug, Northampton and East Longmeadow already this year.
Northampton (9-6) - The Blue Devils have gone 1-3 in their last four games and have officially put themselves into a tough position. After losses to Central and Minnechaug, they now face East Longmeadow, Holyoke and West Side and could potentially take a five-game losing streak into the last two games, which are at Ludlow and at Central.

Out
Chicopee, Chicopee Comp, Minnechaug, Sci-Tech, Westfield

DIVISION 2

Clinched
Athol, Drury, Easthampton, Hoosac Valley, Mahar, Palmer

On the bubble:
Belchertown (9-7) - Three of the four Orioles games are tough ones, but they should get in. Belchertown is 8-2 in its last 10 games.
Frontier (9-7) - Tough win against Mohawk tonight, but a win is a win at this point and the Red Hawks will get No. 10 at some point.
Hampshire (8-8) - The team having the strangest season of anyone in WMass has a good shot at second in the league, but must take care of at least one of its final three league games to have a chance to do so.
Mount Greylock (5-10) - Mounties have five games left and need to either win out or find a way to finish second in the Berkshire South.
South Hadley (8-7) - Tigers should have at least two more wins in them. They certainly don't want to be 9-10 heading into the game against Granby on Feb. 21.
Southwick (9-6) - The Rams will get in. Rematch at Holyoke Catholic on Valentine's Day should be interesting.
Wahconah (7-9) - It is crazy that a team as good as the Warriors is still deeply on the bubble to get into the tournament. It really shows the depth of Berkshire County. In its last three games, Wahconah has lost at Lenox by two, won at Lee by two and then lost at Drury by two. Now it has Pittsfield at home on Friday, then are at Monument, at Coaches vs. Cancer (for a third game against either Lee, Pittsfield or Drury) and then at Taconic. The Warriors, who could absolutely get to the Cage if they qualify, must win three of those games to get in. Crazy.

Out
Cathedral, Commerce, Mohawk, Monument, Taconic

DIVISION 3

Clinched
Gateway Regional, Granby, Hopkins Academy, Lee, Lenox, New Leadership, Sabis, Ware

On the bubble:

Franklin Tech (8-5) - A lot of Tri-County bubble teams will be playing one another in the next few weeks.
Holyoke Catholic (8-9) - Gaels are likely to get two more wins in their last three games, and could still win the Bi-County West once again.
McCann (4-9) - The Hornets have a lot of games left and are also still very much in the hunt for a top two spot in the Bi-County West.
Monson (7-9) - Kind of like Wahconah in D-2, Monson is definitely good enough to be considered a tournament team, but their tough league could keep them out. Need to go 3-1 against Sabis, South Hadley, Smith Academy and Ware. Tough, tough, tough.
Mount Everett (9-7) - The Eagles will get four chances at win No. 10, but it could come down to Coaches vs. Cancer on Feb. 18.
Pathfinder (8-7) - Remaining schedule looks like they'll get to 10.
St. Joseph's (9-5) - I'm a little confused on this one. I only have the Crusaders with 17 total games (at Hoosac on Feb. 10; Coaches vs. Cancer Feb. 18, vs. Greylock Feb. 21), which would mean they are already clinched. Can anyone confirm their remaining schedule?
Smith Academy (8-8) - They should get win No. 9 on Friday. Then they need one more either at Monson (2/15), at Mahar (2/17) or vs. Frontier (2/21).
Westfield Voke (7-7) - From what I can find, they need to go 2-2 in final four games and it's not going to be easy with Franklin Tech, Gateway and New Leadership among the remaining schedule. They did beat NLCS last time at home by six, however.

Out

We'll have complete details posted later today.

Lenox downs Hopkins 2-1 in D3 boys final

Chris Consedine scored the game-winner with 27:17 left in the second half to lift Lenox to its third straight Western Massachusetts Division 3 title.

Tyler Szymkowicz scored the first goal of the game for Hopkins in the 6th minute.

The Milionaires evened the score late in the first half on a controversial play that saw an offsides call by the line judge waived off by the head referee and the two officials engaged in a heated exchange both at the time and at halftime.

We'll have much more on the game later.

Frontier FH wins D2 title in 2OT

Kacey Roberts scored with a little more than 8 minutes left in 2OT to lift the Frontier Regional to a 1-0 in over Smith Academy in the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament championship at Mount Holyoke College on Friday morning.

Hampshire boys in soccer tourney; seeds announced

The Hampshire Regional boys soccer team, which finished one game below .500 and couldn't play its final game against Southwick because of the aftermath of this weekend's storm, was one of multiple teams awarded berths by the MIAA.

We'll have full stories and seedings from today's meeting posted in a bit.

No update yet on Hampshire boys tourney situation

Just checked in with Hampshire Regional boys soccer coach Dan Moynahan, who told me they haven't heard yet if they have been granted the hardship waiver by the MIAA.

You can read more about the issue here.

I had been expecting to hear about the decision sometime tonight since the tournament seeding meeting is tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Granby High School.

Hampshire isn't the only team in this situation. The Berkshire Eagle wrote about it today as well.

We are working on a few more stories for tomorrow's paper, which I'm sure will be posted soon. They include updates to this week's football schedules and the volleyball seedings being released.

Amherst softball wins title; Easthampton baseball falls short

The Amherst softball team defeated Agawam 2-0 at UMass on Monday to earn its second straight WMass Division 1 Tournament title and third in four years. The Hurricanes get a rematch Thursday in the state semifinals against Milford, which won last year's state semis 1-0 in eight innings. The game is set for 4 p.m. back at UMass.

In baseball, Easthampton battled back from an early 6-0 deficit to even the score with Pioneer Regional, but the Panthers won it 8-6 with a two-run homer in the seventh at Bullens Field in Westfield.

We'll have much more on both games posted later.

Saturday's Softball/Baseball title games PPD

Championship Saturday won't feature as many teams raising trophies as usual, as the constant rain has postponed both the baseball and softball title games.

Baseball games have been postponed to Monday, but times and locations are still TBA at this point.

Softball, meanwhile, is currently set for Sunday. The times and place (UMass) remain the same. D2 will start at 11 a.m., D3 at 1 p.m. and D1 at 3 p.m.

Of course, the forecast for Sunday isn't much better than Saturday...

Girls D1 tennis is now at 2 p.m. at the Ludlow Athletic Club, while lacrosse remains set for 11 a.m. (girls) and 1 p.m. (Boys) Saturday at AIC.

Keep an eye on MIAA.net for updates throughout the weekend.

Hampshire wins; Granby falls

After waiting nearly two full days to complete its WMass D2 Tournament semifinal against Palmer, Hampshire Regional scored a run in the restarted bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 9-8 win and advance to its third-straight final.

Hampshire will play No. 1 Wahconah for the title Saturday at UMass at 11 a.m.

Granby, meanwhile, struggled through a four-error third inning that saw superpower Turners Falls score 10 times en route to a 14-2 victory in the D-3 semifinals.

The complete stories from both games will be posted later tonight.

NOTES: We will wrap up Championship Saturday on next week's podcast, which will be posted sometime Tuesday. ... Past championship results are posted below the previews. ... As always, you can reach me at jpignatiello@gazettenet.com.

DIVISION 1, 5:45 p.m.
No. 3 Amherst (20-2) projected starters

F-Nancy Mangels, 5-10, SR
F-Kristen Ferola, 5-9, JR
C-Forbasaw Nkamebo, 6-0, JR
G-Victoria Stewart, 5-8, JR
G-Brianna Leonard, 5-10, JR
No. 4 Longmeadow (15-7) projected starters
F-Tajmah-Nae Lewis, 5-10, FR
F-Dana Pugh, 5-8, JR
F-Alison Donnelly, 5-6, SR
G-Eric Oundjian, 5-9, JR
G-Jennifer Hurwitz, 5-7, SO
Head to head: Amherst won twice by four times each, including once in overtime.
How they got here: Amherst beat Northampton and Holyoke; Longmeadow beat Pittsfield and West Springfield
Outlook: We can only hope this matchup matches the terrificly intense semifinal games these two teams won to get here. Both squad showed off plenty of gumption in those victories, as Longmeadow refused to let West Side get any momentum, even in OT and Amherst held on despite a massive Holyoke comeback combined with severe late foul trouble. These two teams played a pair of close games that went right to the end, but the Hurricanes earned the victory in each. The squads are similar in that neither has a superstar that has earned major headlines (although I'd take Leonard among just about anyone in WMass this year), but they are strong teams that play defense up and down the roster and can get offensive contributions from everyone. Either team winning is a tremendous story.
NOTE: Check out Saturday's Gazette for my story on this matchup.

DIVISION 2, 2:15 p.m.
No. 9 Palmer (15-8) projected starters

F-Morissa Heilman, 5-9, JR
C-Tara Ingram, 5-10, SR
G-Beverly Farris, 5-2, SR
G-Halie Laviolette, 5-2, JR
G-Alyssa Darling, 5-2, SO
No. 3 Wahconah (16-6) projected starters
F-Sara Hamilton, 5-9, SR
C-Sam Burgner, 5-10, SR
G-Aliah Curry, 5-6, SR
G-Sarah Whitestone, 5-6, SR
G-Carly Zink, 5-7, SR
Head to head: Did not play
How they got here: Palmer beat Mahar, Frontier and Belchertown; Wahconah beat Drury and Hampshire
Outlook: Division 2 felt wide open all year and here we are with a pair of teams that had cast some doubt on themselves at some point during the regular season, only to show they have exactly what it takes to win in the postseason. Both teams have good playoff experience and won't be rattled in the Cage. The guard matchups should be terrific to watch as all of them had big moments in the semifinals. Ingram was the underrated standout in the Palmer win over Belchertown, as she took over when Laviolette and Darling got cold and was also a force, along with Heilman, inside to keep the Orioles strong post game from finding a groove. Hamilton, meanwhile, plays much bigger than her size for the Warriors.

DIVISION 3, 10:45 a.m.
No. 1 Lee (22-1) projected starters

F-Stephanie Young, 5-11, SO
F-Camryn Biasin, 5-6, SO
G-Casey Gaul, 5-2, SR
G-Eileen Dooley, 5-2, SO
G-Tara Dooley, 5-4, SR
No. 2 Sabis (23-1) projected starters
F-Alexandra Williams, 5-9, SR
F-Taevosha Rentas, 6-0, SR
G-Arianna Garcia, 5-4, SO
G-Jazmine Collins, 5-8, SO
G-Alexis Chappell, 5-8, SR
Head to head: Lee won by 11 on Dec. 13 at Sabis
How they got here: Lee beat Pathfinder, Granby and Ware; Sabis beat Franklin Tech, Hopkins Academy and Monson
Outlook: The game we've been waiting for; we can only hope it lives up to the considerable hype bestowed on it. It does, in fact, have a chance to be the best game of the day. It certainly features interesting matchups and storylines as Lee looks for its fourth straight title and eighth out of the last nine years. Sabis, meanwhile, makes its first trip to the finals and just might have enough talent to win the thing. Both teams are deep and athletic. They both play defense and like to run. It will be interesting to see how Lee guards Chappell and Collins in the backcourt, as the duo will likely have a significant height advantage over their defenders. Still, it's hard to imagine Sabis' pressure defense forcing enough turnovers and turning them into fast breaks in order to keep Lee at bay. The Wildcats take extremely good care of the ball and the Bulldogs will have to force them into some discomfort to have the kind of offensive explosion they'll need for a win.

D2 Girls Hoop Semifinal Capsules

NOTE: Full previews of all three girls finals will be posted on the blog Friday evening. I’ll also have a story in Saturday’s Gazette previewing the girls games.

SEMIFINALS
Division 2 at Curry Hicks Cage
No. 2 Hampshire Regional (17-4) vs. No. 3 Wahconah Regional (15-6), 6 p.m.

Head to head: Did not play
How they got here: Hampshire beat Monument 48-40; Wahconah beat Drury 59-49
Players to watch: Hampshire’s Margo McCarthy, Sarah Kober, Kayla Burgielewicz; Wahconah’s Aliah Curry, Sarah Hamilton, Sarah Whitestone
Winner gets: Winner of Belchertown-Palmer in finals a Cage Saturday at 2:15.
Notes: Very interesting matchup here as Hampshire has to go through a second-straight strong Berkshire North team if it wants to get to the finals. Wahconah can score from deep with Curry and Whitestone, but also has enough size to cause problems. McCarthy has emerged as a star as a senior and can join a long legacy of Hampshire seniors to go out on top of WMass with a win. Kober and Burgielewicz will be key on the glass if Hampshire wins.

No. 4 Belchertown (15-6) vs. No. 9 Palmer (14-8), 7:30 p.m.
Head to head: Split the season series
How they got here: Belchertown beat Cathedral 42-40; Palmer beat Mahar 58-37 and Frontier 39-37
Players to watch: Belchertown’s Brianna Del Valle, Katherine Goodale, Britiany Browning; Palmer’s Alyssa Darling, Halie Laviolette, Tara Ingram
Winner gets: Winner of Hampshire-Wahconah in finals a Cage Saturday at 2:15.
Notes: The first two matchups between these rivals and Bi-County East-mates were very competitive. The teams have different strengths with Belchertown’s size inside led by 1,000-point scorer Del Valle and that strong Panthers backcourt. Laviolette has been terrific in the postseason yet again. Browning could be the key for Belchertown’s offense. If she makes a few 3-pointers early, the defense stretches out and Del Valle can take over. This will mark Orioles' third straight trip to the semifinals, but they haven't gotten into the finals yet. Big senior class would like to get over the hump.

Girls Hoop D1 Semifinal Capsules

SEMIFINALS
Division 1 at AIC, Springfield

No. 2 Holyoke (19-2) vs. No. 3 Amherst (19-2), 6 p.m.
Head to head:
Amherst won 45-42 at home on Jan. 4
How they got here: Holyoke beat Chicopee Comp 52-47; Amherst beat Northampton 47-40
Players to watch: Holyoke's Monique Heard, Selena Yates, Alison Littles, Brianna Carner; Amherst's Brianna Leonard, Kristen Ferola, Forbasaw Nkamebo, Victoria Stewart, Nancy Mangels
Winner gets: Winner of West Side-Longmeadow semifinals at Curry Hicks Cage on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.
Notes: Littles' status is up in the air for the game, and you have to wonder how much she'll be able to contribute after missing so much time due to injury. After all, these teams want to turn the game into a track meet. As with every game she's in, Heard is the key player. Amherst will have to focus virtually all of its attention on keeping her in check and will likely trap early and often to force someone else to set up the offense. Expect the Hurricanes to use three or four different players on her in their man-to-man, including Molly Schulman off the bench. Amherst played terrific defense the first time around to take control, but Heard and Co. exploded down the stretch to make it a game.

No. 1 West Springfield (19-2) vs. No. 4 Longmeadow (14-7), 8 p.m.
Head to head:
West Side won 55-47 in Longmeadow on Jan. 7
How they got here: West Side beat East Longmeadow 72-63; Longmeadow beat Pittsfield 56-47
Players to watch: West Springfield's Dana Theobald, Emily Taylor; Longmeadow's Erica Oundjian, Tajmah'Nae Lewis, Jen Hurwitz
Winner gets: Winner of Holyoke-Amherst semifinals at Curry Hicks Cage on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.
Notes: As she's done all season to everyone, Theobald lit up the Lancers for 33 points the first time around. She's the focal point, but Taylor has shown the ability to make opponents pay for losing track of her while tracking the standout junior. Longmeadow, meanwhile, has bounced back from an 8-12 season last year to reach the semifinals this season. Lewis, a freshman, and Oundjian have excelled as newcomers.
