Baseball postponed

Both the Division 1 and 2 championship games at Szot Park in Chicopee were postponed Saturday due to rain. The Division 2 final will resume Sunday at noon with South Hadley leading Palmer 3-1. The Tigers will bat in the bottom of the third. Ryan Horstman of South Hadley has a no-hitter through three. He also has a two-run triple to highlight the offense.The Division 1 final between Amherst and East Longmeadow will start at 3 p.m. at Szot Sunday.

MIAA REJECTS PROPOSAL FOR STATEWIDE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

WESTBOROUGH - The members of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) today rejected a proposal from its Ad Hoc Football Committee to implement a statewide football tournament. Members attending the Association's 32nd Annual Meeting here voted 190 to 114 against the plan which would have significantly altered the conduct of high school football in the state.

The proposal which was developed over the past 18 months called for eliminating leagues for football and placing schools in 16 team divisions based on geography and male enrollment. Under the plan, playoff games would be held in weeks eight, nine and ten of the season and conclude the Saturday after Thanksgiving recess with Championship games at Gillette Stadium.

"This issue was discussed extensively at all levels of the Association and the final plan represented input from dozens of meetings with principals, athletic directors, coaches and others" MIAA President Barry Haley said. "While there was widespread support for the concept of expanding playoff eligibility to include more schools, today's vote indicates there remain some important concerns to be overcome."

The football tournament will continue under the format that has been in place for many years.

Amherst has won seven of its last eight, including six on the road. Overall the Hurricanes had nine road wins, which is tied for first among D1 teams. Putnam meanwhile has won six of eight, including a win over Valley League champ Sci-Tech. Against common opponents Amherst is 6-3 while Putnam is 4-5. Putnam has one win vs. the field, against Sci-Tech. Amherst beat each of the top four seeds in the last two weeks.

No. 10 Chicopee (10-10) at No. 7 Holyoke (11-9)
At 7-4 the Pacers were on the verge of making the playoffs with one month left in the season. Chicopee though lost five straight before righting itself with three straight wins. Don’t put a lot of stock into those losses, which were all by singles digits and by a total of 20 points. They lost to top seed Northampton by one, No. 3 West Side by six and D-2 No. 1 seed Sabis by five. Chicopee went 6-6 against tournament teams. Holyoke started the season 1-6 before closing the season 10-3. Holyoke went 4-9 against tourney teams. Chicopee won 59-56 on Dec. 28.

DIVISION 2
No. 9 Palmer (13-7) at No 8 Belchertown (15-5)
The Orioles have won 10 straight and are really rolling. They beat No. 4 seed Hampshire by 14 and beat Palmer by 16. The team is also 8-2 at home with one of those losses a four-point setback in overtime to Amherst. Palmer meanwhile started the season 3-4 but credit the slow start to the boys soccer team’s run to the state final as most of the team played soccer. The group regrouped and won six straight with wins over South Hadley, Belchertown and Holyoke Catholic, the No. 3 seed in D3. The team slipped down the stretch going 4-3.

No. 10 Wahconah (10-10) at No. 7 Easthampton (17-5)
Wahconah’s season has truly been up and down. The Warriors’ success line looks like this: W-L-W-L-W-L-W-L-L-W-L-W-L-L-L-W-L-W-W-W. The team’s first winning streak put them into the postseason. They lost to Taconic by two and Drury by eight in overtime so the team can play with the big boys. Easthampton lost its season opener then won 13 straight. The Eagles closed 4-4, however they played without leading scorer Brendan Rios for the final three games. Easthampton’s outlook depends on the health of Rios’ ankle.

DIVISION 3
No. 9 Monson (8-12) at No 8 Dean Tech (17-3)
The Mustangs qualified by finishing second in the Bi-County South. However realignment hurt the Bi-County. As the top five teams (based on four-year records) played in the North and the bottom five teams played in the South. Only Holyoke Catholic had a non-losing record vs. the North and it went 5-5. Monson went 0-10 vs. tournament teams. Dean Tech is a dangerous team with 1,000-point scorer Josue Figueroa. Dean beat Palmer, Southwick and Smith Academy.

No. 10 Franklin Tech (13-7) at No. 7 Frontier (11-9)
Franklin finished fourth in the Tri-County League and has won 7-of-8. Common opponents are Greenfield and Turners Falls and Franklin lost both. Frontier swept Turners and split with Greenfield. The Red Hawks closed the season 3-4 but defeated Easthampton down the stretch. Matt Chamberlin is the lone healthy holdover from the Red Hawks’ state title run three years ago (Erik Abramson suffered a season-ending injury). Frontier can still play defense, it’s on offense where the team struggles.

No. 11 Renaissance (12-8) at No. 6 Lee (11-9)
These two teams are familiar with other. Lee won 76-72 on Dec. 28 in Springfield. Renaissance might not have anybody to matchup with big man Trey Morin but it has speed. Renaissance has won 5-of-7. Lee has won 5-of-6.

No. 12 McCann Tech (11-9) at No. 5 Lenox (12-8)
These two met twice in December. Lenox won 70-38 in both teams’ opener, and again 58-46 on the 28th. McCann went 1-5 against Berkshire County teams and 1-8 vs. D-3 tournament teams. Lenox won nine straight to start the season but closed 3-8. Lenox went 4-2 against the Berkshire South and was 4-2 against D-3 tournament teams.

Ziomek fires perfect game

Amherst Regional junior lefty Kevin Ziomek struck out 18 and threw a perfect game, beating Northampton 3-0 Friday night in Amherst in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division 1 Tournament.

Ziomek was superb, throwing fastballs, curves and sliders. He threw 92 pitches, 68 for strikes. Only one ball left the infield, a Jimmy Laizer fly in the seventh.

Neither team is deep, each playing about three reserves. Sci-Tech had the top-ranked offense (66.4 points per game) in Division 1 and fifth-ranked defense (55.1). Central is fourth (63.1) and fourth (54.6) respectively.

Hoosac finished with the third-ranked defense (48.9 points per game) and seventh-ranked offense (59.2) in Division 2. Drury had the third-ranked offense (63.8) and seventh-ranked defense (54.2).

History: NLCS reached the finals in 2004 and beat Frontier. The Wildcats lost to Sabis in 2006. Turners won in 1972 and 1973, which was the last time the Indians reached the finals.

D2 Boys Hoop Preview

Comments: Palmer had a relatively easy time with Belchertown in the quarters while Hoosac needed a buzzer beater from Burke to beat Mahar. It’s not the first time Burke won a game at the buzzer this season so Hoosac has the edge in close-game experience. Either team could make a case for having the tougher schedule. Palmer played Sabis, NLCS, Quabbin and Southbridge, the latter two D1 teams out of central Mass. Hoosac played Taconic twice, Drury twice, Mohawk, Commerce, Putnam and Amherst the latter three D1 teams from the PVIAC.
Keys for Hoosac: Keep Bailey off the glass and slow down France. The loss of Nate Biros to an ACL tear will hurt with blocking out Bailey so Larabee will need to play well.
Keys for Palmer: Slow down Burke (easier said than done).
History: Hoosac last appeared in the finals in 2005 where it lost to South Hadley. Hoosac won its only title in 2003. Should the Hurricanes advance, it will set up the first final ever between heated rivals Drury and Hoosac. Drury has won six titles, most recently in 1990, and is in the finals for the first time since 1995.
Palmer reached the Division 3 finals in 1989 where it lost to Smith Academy.

Another Correction in Boys Hoop

Two teams in the boys Division 3 tournament had their seeds adjusted Monday.

Easthampton (13-7) is no longer the No. 6 seed. The Eagles are now seventh and will host No. 10 Lenox (11-9) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Pioneer Regional (14-6) is no longer the No. 7 seed. The Pioneers are now sixth and will host No. 11 Franklin County Tech (14-6) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Should both teams win this changes who their quarterfinal opponent will be. Easthampton would face No. 2 New Leadership (18-2) in Springfield while Pioneer faces No. 3 Turners Falls (15-5) for the third time this season.

CORRECTION - Boys Hoop Seeds Change

The Western Massachusetts Boys Division 2 Tournament seeds were corrected shortly after the seeding meeting Saturday.

Tournament Director Tom Ford found a few mistakes about an hour after the meeting conluded at the Basketball Hall of Fame.

The new seeds are as followed:

South Hadley was originally given the No. 8 seed followed by Mahar and Hampshire Regional. Mohawk was previously the sixth followed by Wahconah.

South Hadley will play at Mohawk on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Hampshire will play at Mahar on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
