Hitting the low notes: How to save money on Tanglewood tickets

Getting lawn seats at Tanglewood in Lenox to hear the Boston Symphony Orchestra is a summer tradition
for us, and one year the tickets were a little bit cheaper, thanks to the Big Y supermarket chain. If you presented your Big Y rewards card at the box office, you got a few dollars off.

So when we made our annual pilgrimage to Tanglewood last weekend we pulled out our Big Y card. Bad news: no more discount. How about AAA? we asked. No. AARP? No. We had to pay full price for the $19 tickets (which is still pretty cheap, actually).

But it turns out that there are Tanglewood discounts, if you know where to look. This week the press office told me that the BSO website lists a number of them; you can find them at this link.

There are even more discounts out there. While they aren't noted on the BSO website, the person at the box office told me that members of the military and members of the Massachusetts Teachers Association are entitled to reduced-price tickets. The press office confirmed that both qualify for a 30 percent discount.

One additional deal you won't find on the BSO website: free lawn admission for all on Friday, Aug. 12, thanks to the Highland Foundation.
