WEST SPRINGFIELD - A graveside service for Alan J. Ball, 72, of Circle Drive, West Springfield, and formerly a longtime Springfield resident, who died Dec. 28 at Baystate Medical Center, will be held Monday, May 19, at 1 p.m. in East Windsor Cemetery, Windsor.

SOUTHAMPTON - Andrew Derwicki, 88, beloved husband of Barbara (Bobbie Dee) for 48 years, passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2008.

He was a man's man, an all-around great guy with a keen sense of humor who could also charm the ladies when the spirit moved him. Gentle-natured, he was a great lover of animals and wildlife.

TURNERS FALLS - Justin Edward Porter of Fifth Street, Turners Falls, died before birth on May 8 at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

Ruth Seitz

AMHERST - Ruth Taylor Seitz of Amherst passed away at the age of 87.

She was born at the family home on Farmers Row in Groton on June 23, 1920, to Eva Belle (Mayflower descendant) and Herbert William Taylor, both of Groton. Ruth was the granddaughter of Nelson N. and Isabelle Torrey and the great-granddaughter of Willard and Catherine Torrey.

James Smith

GREENFIELD - James B. Smith, recently of the Arbors of Greenfield, passed away at the Buckley Healthcare Center on Thursday, May 8. He was 93.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Eleanore; daughters Carolyn Friga of Cleveland, Joan Murawski of Falmouth, and Margaret Ross of Shutesbury; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

HADLEY - Valerie Lee Telega, 60, of 6 Mount Warner Road, North Hadley, died early Friday morning, May 9, at home after a period of failing health.

She was born in Wareham on Oct. 25, 1947, the daughter of Warren and Phyllis (Bumpus) Besse.

Irena Sendler; saved thousands of Warsaw Ghetto children

WARSAW, Poland - Irena Sendler - credited with saving some 2,500 Jewish children from the Nazi Holocaust by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto, some of them in baskets - died Monday, her family said. She was 98.

NEW SALEM - There will be a committal service on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Mountainview Cemetery, Prescott Road, New Salem, for Ruth (Eaton) Seymour, 93, who died Jan. 4 at the Center for Extended Care at Amherst, following an illness.

Geraldine Suriner

NORTHAMPTON - Geraldine M. Suriner, 84, formerly of Rick Drive and Rockridge, died Tuesday at the Northampton Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Born in Northampton, Dec. 28, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Ralph D. and Mary A. (Howard) Suriner.
