You don’t have to look very far to find a group of hometown friends who’ve decided to form a band. It happens all the time in middle schools and high schools across the country, and across the world. Amherst musicians Varun Sheel and Curtis Barnes are following that trend. Sheel and Barnes, both 19, developed a close friendship back in elementary school, when the two joined an afterschool orchestra for fifth-graders. Sheel, who played violin, was attending Wildwood Elementary, Barnes, a cellist, was a student at the Fort River Elementary. Now students at UMass, the two recently formed the band, Solara.
