You’d think a bluegrass outfit named Della Mae would be straight out of Appalachia, but this all-female collective came together just a few years ago in Boston, born of the inspiration to mix traditional bluegrass with the broader range of American folk and songwriting traditions. The band’s lineup includes powerhouse vocalist Celia Woodsmith, former Grand National Fiddle Champion Kimber Ludiker, impeccable mandolinist Jenni Lynn Gardner, astonishingly innovative flat-pick guitar player Courtney Hartman plus well-seasoned bass player Amanda Kowalski. Taking their cue from a spectrum of native performers/songwriters — Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Jimmy Martin, the Carter Family, Loretta Lynn — the quintet layers their bedrock bluegrass sound with storytelling songs that are part blues, part country and a little bit rock, as they’ll demonstrate when they perform at the Iron Horse in Northampton on Friday.
