When guitarist/vocalist Tom Pappalardo and drummer/vocalist Sturgis Cunningham join forces, they become The Demographic. Priding themselves on bull-free rock songs, the twosome can pummel their instruments with blunt force ... but even when they go “unplugged” and replace the electric guitar with an acoustic one and switch out the big bass drum for a small suitcase, the duo keeps its music intense.

The Demographic celebrates the release of its new CD, “Listen Close,” at a show tonight at the Elevens at 9:30. Also playing are Trucks, The Glad Machine and Easthampton Savings Band (and worth noting is that The Demographic isn’t headlining the quadruple bill; they go on around 10:30).

“We haven’t played loud since Valentine’s Day,” the band said on its Facebook page, so don’t leave home without the earplugs.

“Listen Close” was recorded at Sonelab with Mark Alan Miller and a single for the album was released last month: “Letter,” an ornery and catchy original, paired with a jittery cover of the Rolling Stones’ “19th Nervous Breakdown.”

Juke Joint Jazz, whose repertoire includes gems like Miles Davis’ “Nardis” and Thelonious Monk’s “Blue Monk,” plays its monthly show at the Basement in Northampton tonight at
8 p.m.

It’s a Zydeco Dance Party with Preston Frank, The Demijohns and Lil’ Orphans & Bayou X at the Arts Block in Greenfield Saturday at 7 p.m.

Winterpills plays its first full-band show in some time at the intimate DreamAway Lodge in Becket Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys brings its retro rock ’n’ roll back to the Valley for a concert at the Iron Horse Sunday at 7 p.m. Country-pop locals Salvation Alley String Band will open.

Frank Zappa tribute band Project/Object — now featuring FIVE previous members of past Zappa lineups (Ike Willis, Ray White, Tom Fowler, Ed Mann and Denny Walley) — returns for a night at the Iron Horse Tuesday at 7.

Avant-garde jazz trumpeter Arthur Brooks and Ensemble V perform at the Wistariahurst Museum in Holyoke Thursday at 6 p.m. Percussionist Matt Weston begins the show, and a question-and answer-session with all the musicians will take place after the performance. Free, but donations are accepted.

Cellist Lori Goldston (Nirvana, David Byrne, Cat Power) and multi-instrumentalist Rachel Blumberg (The Decemberists, M.Ward, Bright Eyes) play a double bill at the Parlor Room at Signature Sounds in Northampton Thursday at 7 p.m.

Northampton indie trio Goat Boy performs at the Luthiers Co-Op in Easthampton Thursday at 8:30 p.m. The Miles Kept follows at 9:30.

Thick Shakes comes from Boston with a Farfisa organ a-blasting and manically catchy garage songs like “Go Back To New York” and “Neighbor’s Goods.” If you cherish your Nuggets box set, they’re right up your alley. They share a bill with locals The Shangri Lips and The Original Cowards at the Sierra Grille in Northampton Thursday at 10 p.m.
