Weekend planner: Music
If you have a nodding acquaintance with jazz, or are already a fan but don’t quite understand it, six-time Grammy winner and 2012 Baritone Saxophonist of the Year Gary Smulyan will be at the Jewish Community of Amherst Sunday for an afternoon of musical enlightenment. Presented by the Valley Jazz Network — an outreach arm of the University of Massachusetts Fine Arts Center whose mission includes audience education and development — the concert by Smulyan and his bandmates will extend to a discussion of the basic architecture of jazz, its deep forms and structures, to help unlock doors for those who may feel mystified, intimidated or just unsure of how to listen to it. The informal session will include a question-and-answer period and a reception. Smulyan will be attended by Pete Malinverni, piano; Ray Drummond, bass; and Billy Drummond, drums.
3 p.m. $15 suggested donation at the door. The JCA is located at 742 Main St. in Amherst. (Gary Firstenberg photo)
