Weekend Planner: Music

“He thought it was a good idea,” recalled Roberta Cowell shortly before her death (in 2002, at age 84) of her 1964 proposal to David Rose, then minister of Cummington’s Village Church, that the town get together for a sing-through of the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah.”

Today tidings of this quintessentially New England ritual have spread throughout the Northeast, impelling devotees from such far-flung regions as New York and Boston to make their way to the tiny hilltown, despite sleet, snow and gloom of night.

Again conducted by Goshen’s Gregory Hayes, this Sunday’s 48th Annual Messiah Sing-Through will feature soloists soprano Suzanne Anderson, contralto Cynthia Sanner, baritone Steve Curylo and tenor Dario Colette. Listeners as well as singers are welcome and instrumentalists are invited to join the “Cummington Philharmonic” pick-up orchestra for the 4 p.m. performance. (BYO music stand.) Orchestral scores and a limited number of vocal scores will be available. Refreshments follow.
