Hollywood has its eye on Sunderland to film stunt scene from for 'The Judge'

A stunt scene from the Warner Bros.’ “The Judge” may be filmed in Sunderland.

Most of the shooting for the “The Judge,” starring Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall and Vera Farmiga, will be in Shelburne Falls from May 31 to June 18.

The movie tells the story of a successful lawyer (Downey) who comes to his hometown for his mother’s funeral, and finds his estranged father (Duvall), a prominent judge in town, is a murder suspect.

Filming dates in Sunderland are tentative, said Town Administrator Margaret Nartowicz. The town will have more details next week, she said.

In anticipation of the town’s special appearance, the Select Board on Monday approved a film policy based on Shelburne’s.

The film policy requires the Select Board approval for any filming or photography of any commercial, motion picture or advertisement in the town.

The filming of news events or filming by a nonprofit organization or a project with five staff members or less on site does not require a film permit.

It sets a $25 fee per day for the production company.

The production company would also be responsible for any costs incurred beyond the ordinary duties of town staff and equipment.
