Weekend Planner: Film

One of the few females to succeed as a feature film director at the East German state-owned movie production studio known as DEFA (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft), Iris Gusner focused on the role and emancipation of women in East Germany in the e_SSRq70s and e_SSRq80s, before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Her 1981 semi-autobiographical film “If the Earth Weren’t Round” — about an East German woman and Syrian man who fall in love and have a child while studying geology in Moscow— will be screened tonight at Amherst Cinema, with the director in attendance for questions and discussion. $8.75 general admission; $7.75 seniors; students free. 7:30. amherstcinema.org
