Steve Pfarrer’s Best Bets

75 YEARS OF COMMUNITY MUSIC

It was in 1939 that the Pioneer Valley Symphony formed in Greenfield — and 75 years later, one of the country’s oldest community orchestras is set to celebrate that landmark with its first concert of the 2013-14 season. It takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Academy of Music in Northampton, when PVS, whose members run from high school musicians to retirees, perform music by Johann Strauss, John Harbison and others. Get tickets at academyofmusictheatre.tix.com.

ANOTHER GOOD BET

Speaking of Greenfield, that’s the setting Friday and Saturday for the third annual Double Take Fringe Festival: eight mini-plays in eight venues, all within walking distance, with satire, farce and fantasy in the mix. The shows play multiple times over the weekend. Info and tickets at www.double-take.org.
