Fall was in the air Saturday in downtown Amherst as kids and parents, locals and visitors flocked to the 27th annual Apple Harvest Crafts Fair and Children’s Festival. Tents, games and even a petting zoo sprang up under the autumn sunshine on the Town Common, ringed by trees with brilliantly changing foliage.

The festival was a fundraiser for the Amherst Family Center, affiliated with the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Joanne Levenson, director of the Office of Family Resources at UMass, estimated that more than 1,000 people attended the festival. Children’s activities included face painting, pumpkin painting, lawn games, musical entertainment , a bounce house — in addition to just playing around in a big pile of hay. Kids also visited donkeys, pigs and a goat in a petting zoo set up by The Traveling Hooves.

Vendors offered a variety of crafts for sale including clothing, art, jewelry and bath products. Local foods from The Bistro Box, Atkins Farms and other vendors were also available.

“Parents are smiling, everybody’s relaxing and socializing,” said organizer Sue Kelly. High school senior Katie Zartman said the weather alone was enough to make her content.

“I’m happy it’s so nice out,” she said.
