Last Saturday in Florence, VFW Post 8006 put on an all-you-can-eat pig roast fundraiser that drew more than 100 people. The funds will go toward installing an elevator in the building, a former church, making the large upstairs hall more accessible.

VFW member and neighbor Joe Severance rose early Friday to start a fire under the 200-pound “roast beast” and, by 4:30 in the afternoon, it was ready to be served. Post vice commander Tom Pease, dressed as the Disney character Goofy, drew raffle tickets for goodies donated by area merchants to benefit the elevator fund. Children enjoyed a bounce house while country rock from a five-piece band, Chicken Wire, drew a lively group of grown-ups to the parking lot dance floor.
