Kathleen Mellen’s best bets for the weekend
VOICE FROM INSIDE
I once worked in an office on the grounds of the former Northampton State Hospital. The last of the residents had moved out by then, and the place had a creepy, haunted feel. I could only guess what life had been like for the patients there. Northampton painter Genevieve Burnett doesn’t have to imagine; she was a patient. In her exhibit, “The Life that the Artist Within Saved: Inside and Out of the State Institution for the Insane,” which opens with a reception Friday from 5 to 8 at Historic Northampton, Burnett offers a glimpse from inside a community that has often been silent. ANOTHER GOOD BET
Carillonneur Gerald Martindale gives a carillon concert Saturday, 7 to 8 p.m., at UMass Amherst. It takes place at the Old Chapel, but the music will be heard across the campus.
