SOBERING FILM

Investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill’s acclaimed book “Dirty Wars” offers a look at the covert military operations America has waged ever since 9/11. Now the book has been turned into a riveting documentary exploring secret night raids in Afghanistan and the Middle East and the work of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), the shadowy military command authorized by the White House to assassinate those on an ever-expanding “kill list.” At the Amherst Cinema. www.amherstcinema.org.

ANOTHER GOOD BET

This month, the Hosmer Gallery at Northampton’s Forbes Library features the work of still-life painter Susan Valentine of Leverett, who had a background in graphic design but hadn’t picked up a paintbrush until three years ago — and now has won a national art contest. Also on view are the quirky travel photos of Amy S. Dane of Longmeadow.
