Kristie Zych is a hairstylist at Ochoa Salon in South Hadley. Her career there has spanned 13 years, and she has traveled to New York City and Washington, D.C., to participate in hands-on trainings to keep up with the latest in hair color and cutting trends. She says she loves to make people feel good about themselves, and feels fortunate to wake up every morning and go to a job she loves. Her children’s baseball games and gymnastics meets also keep her busy.

Full name: Kristie Zych

People know you as: Kristie Z

Date and place of birth: April, 1975; Springfield

Address: Belchertown

Who lives under the same roof as you? My husband, Tim, and our kids, Tim, 14, and Karlie, 8

Education: Springfield Technical Community College, cosmetology

Pets: Buddy, a pug, and Korky, a cat

Hobbies: Reading and sewing — when I have time

Book you’d recommend to a friend: I love all kinds of mystery stories

Favorite movie/TV show/singer: Movies — “Titanic” and “Tommy Boy”; TV — “NCIS”; singer — Keith Urban

Five things you can’t live without: My husband, my son, my daughter, my shears and a comb

Last thing you purchased just for fun: Reproduction Atari game system

What’s at the top of your bucket list? Travel

Life-changing experience: I was crushed by a car in my garage when I was home alone. I was lucky to have only suffered a badly broken femur. I could have lost my life. It changed the way I look at everything. I am lucky to be here

A little-known fact about you: I have a fascination with the Titanic. I love reading about and watching research about it. I would love to take a trip down there if that were ever possible

One fashion you’d like to see return: Old-Hollywood glam

What really sets you off? Slackers, people who don’t work to their fullest potential. If you aren’t going to give it your all, then don’t do it at all

If you could spend the day with a celebrity from any time in history, who would it be? Vidal Sassoon. He changed our industry with his passion for hair and his love for the art of hairdressing

Best advice you ever got: Not to worry about the small stuff. Family is more important

Favorite place to get a bite: For lunch, Tailgate Picnic at the Village Commons, South Hadley. They always deliver; fresh and such a variety. For dinner, I’m a sucker for Applebee’s index 550 calorie meals

What does your ideal weekend look like? Camping at the beach with my family

Whom do you most admire? I admire my Nanie, Angie Haley. She just celebrated her 90th birthday and still works 25 hours a week at Springfield College. I admire her strength. It hasn’t always been easy for her but she has carried on. Never complained. She loves working and she loves the kids

Parting shot: Never give up on what you want to do. You can make it happen. It may take hard work but if you really want something, you will do what it takes
