Steve Pfarrer’s Best Bets

LOCAL AND REGIONAL TALENT

For nearly 30 years, the University of Massachusetts Amherst music program has invited talented high school band musicians from across New England and the Northeast to train together for a day and then perform at night, an event known as the Honor Band Festival. On Sunday at 7 p.m., you can hear these students perform during a free concert at the university’s Fine Arts Center Concert Hall.

ANOTHER GOOD BET

Belchertown artist Elizabeth Pols, a 1975 Smith College graduate, paints landscapes inspired by her time in Italy and Maine, using the techniques of classical Renaissance painting and light and color to give her work a touch of mystery. Her new show, “At Water’s Edge,” opens today at the Smith College Alumnae House Gallery.
