Steve Pfarrer’s best bets
GOOD BOOK
Writer and filmmaker Ruth Ozeki, a Smith College graduate, has used her half-Japanese, half-American background to explore the differences between East and West with both humor and insight. She’s out with a new novel, “A Tale for the Time Being,” about the ways in which reading and writing connect two people who will never meet. You can connect with her at her reading Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley.
ANOTHER GOOD BET
On Saturday, Smith College hosts the 2013 Five College Jazz Festival, which features 11 student ensembles playing a range of styles, from chamber jazz to improvisational orchestra to vocal jazz. The concert, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is free and takes place in the Carroll Room of the Smith College Campus Center.
