Steve Pfarrer’s best bets
WAY WITH WORDS
Roots rocker James McMurtry has always had a way with words — not surprising, given his father is novelist Larry McMurtry. The younger McMurtry writes about hardscrabble characters, busted dreams and topical issues with the voice of a workaday poet. His 2006 anthem “We Can’t Make it Here Anymore” won raves as a defining protest song. He’s at Northampton’s Iron Horse Music Hall Thursday; Ray Mason opens the 7 p.m. show.
ANOTHER GOOD BET
Hampden Gallery at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has just opened “Home Drone,” a multifaceted exhibition about U.S. drone strikes, including photos, video and a wall-sized map of drone attacks superimposed on Massachusetts. Tuesdays through Fridays, 1-6 p.m.; Sundays 2-5 p.m.
