Dance party Friday raises funds for Fourth celebration

— Dancing, appetizers and a cash bar are on tap for a party Friday put on by the Northampton Family Fourth Committee, which aims to give parents a fun night out while raising money for a popular fireworks display this summer.

“It is a chance for the grown-ups to get up and have a good time, seeing as they will have to bring the kids to the fireworks in the summer,” said Priscilla Ross, chair of the committee, in a telephone interview Monday.

A similar fundraiser last year drew about 150 people and raised about $1,500 for the Northampton Family Fourth Celebration, which Ross estimates costs about $20,000 to run.

“The energy was incredible. There were people from all different aspects of the community, tons of people on the dance floor,” Ross said.

Ross said that she hopes this year’s dance will raise $1,500 to $2,000.

The party starts at 7 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres provided by local caterer Seth Mias and music by the Paul Collins Quintet. From 8:30 to 11 there will be dancing with music by DJ Matt Peterson. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.

“It is a great way to support the community, and as with any party, the more the merrier,” said Ross.

The money raised will not only help fund the third annual Northampton Family Fourth Celebration, but also help with efforts to ensure the event is offered free. This year’s celebration is set for June 22 at Look Memorial Park on Route 9. It includes fireworks, local food booths and live music. Last year’s event drew a crowd of about 7,000 people. Ross said she developed the event to give the Northampton community a way to celebrate the Fourth of July.

After Friday’s dance, the committee will start its campaign to raise the remaining funds, sending letters to the area business community and past donors to ask for contributions to the event.

Tickets are available at the Northampton Recreation Department and on the committee’s website. Tickets will also be available at the door.
