Kathleen Mellen’s best bets

I heard recently that Northampton Arts Council director Bob Cilman has been kicking around the idea of doing a Mardi-Gras-themed event for years. I’m glad he finally convinced himself. It seems a perfect fit for the council’s eclectic Four Sundays in February series, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. “Mardival” combines New Orleans’-flavored music with that of Brazil’s similar Carnival (both celebrate Fat Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent). Sunday, 2 p.m., Academy of Music. www.northamptonartscouncil.org.

Luke Cavagnac opens his show of work, “A Man’s Gotta Paint What a Man’s Gotta Paint,” at The Invisible Fountain with a party Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. In the Eastworks Building, 116 Pleasant St., Suite 206, Easthampton. 896-8073, www.invisiblefountain.com/.
