Steve Pfarrer’s best bets

RIGHT DIRECTION

Actor/director Ben Affleck has come a long way from the sophomoric performances and tabloid romances that once made him a frequent target of film critics and late-night comics. His most recent directorial effort, “Argo,” a thriller about the Iranian takeover of the U.S. embassy in Tehran in 1979, has earned a slew of awards, including for Affleck’s direction. You can see it at the Amherst Cinema all this week. www.amherstcinema.org; 253-2547

ANOTHER GOOD BET

Children’s author and illustrator Jarret J. Krosoczka of Northampton, author the “Lunch Lady” graphic novels for elementary school readers, joins fellow scribe and illustrator Jef Czekaj at the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst Sunday at 1 p.m. for a mix of punk music, drawing, rapping and reading. “Jammin’ with Jarrett and Jef” is free with museum admission. www.carlemuseum.org; 658-1100
