Steve Pfarrer’s Best Bets
By day, Jeff Holmes directs the jazz and African-American music programs at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He’s equally busy — as a composer, arranger and jazz player. On Wednesday he brings a quartet to the Iron Horse at 7 p.m. to celebrate his new album, “Of One’s Own,” built around his piano playing on original songs and arrangements of work by artists like John Abercrombie.

Former New York Times investigative journalist Leslie Maitland has unearthed a personal story — a lost love between her mother and a young Frenchman in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II. The story of how the war forced the couple apart, and how that shaped Maitland’s life, is detailed in her book “Crossing the Borders of Time,” which she’ll read from Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley.
