Valley Bounty: Pears

Sometimes, just the name can induce you to try a new variety. Harrow’s Sweet? It’s a late season yellow pear with red blushed skin and white flesh. Red Clapp’s Favorite is juicy and bright red. Find these tantalizing types — and more — at local orchards. Pears add a sweet note to savory suppers, topping an arugula salad or roasted with fall vegetables. For an easy, one dish dessert, caramelize pears in a skillet and add a pie crust lid to make an upside-down tart.
