To commemorate its 20th anniversary in Ashfield, Double Edge Theatre will re-imagine “Shahrazad, A Tale of Love and Magic” during this year’s annual Summer Spectacle.
The show opened July 18 and will run through Aug. 24. All shows are at 8 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, rain or shine.
These performances routinely sell out, so those who are interested in attending should not delay in getting tickets.
Conceived and directed by Double Edge founder and artistic director Stacy Klein and the company’s ensemble of actors, “Shahrazad” is the story of a woman who attempts to transform her world through courage and imagination. The production includes tales that weave together elements of poetry, flying, humor, live music and the visual arts, and demonstrates the triumph of creativity over destruction.
“For me, the parallels between what Shahrazad tried to do with her imagination and stories and what we in the Double Edge ensemble are trying to do in our own community and hopefully in our world are profound,” Klein said. “Our reality often seems bleak and then I wander to the stream, and the other paths of the farm and the performance, and see the astounding stone fountains, mosaics, and paintings of local friends and artists, and dream the possibilities of actors flying under the moon, or in the beautiful sunset, and I feel the power of transformation that is indeed possible in a living culture!”
Double Edge Theatre’s productions feature multiple scenes outside that involve the hills, fields, barns, woods and pond of its 100-acre farm.
The acting ensemble includes Jeremy Louise Eaton, Matthew Glassman, Carlos Uriona, Milena Dabova, Hayley Brown, Hannah Jarrell, Jennifer Johnson and the Double Edge Company.
The play was developed in association with the Charlestown Working Theatre and brings together local artists with collaborators from the United States, Poland and Argentina.
“Shahrazad” is the recent recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts’ Art Works grant, which supports multidisciplinary work of high artistic quality.
