Suzanne Wilson’s Best Bets

We’re about to be inundated with remembrances of the Kennedy assassination, 50 years after Dallas. “Letters to Jackie,” a documentary being shown Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Amherst Cinema, is about how Americans were affected by the president’s death — told in their own words in the letters they sent to Jacqueline Kennedy. Directed by Bill Couturié, the film contains archival footage from the Kennedy years. amherstcinema.org.

Presidential historian Ellen Fitzpatrick, who grew up in Amherst, provided the inspiration for Couturié’s film. For her 2010 book, “Letters to Jackie: Condolences from a Grieving Nation,” Fitzpatrick read thousands of the letters; she’ll hold an audience Q&A after the screening on Oct. 24.
