Steve Pfarrer’s Best Bets

SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY UNPLUGGED

Southside Johnny, who first came to prominence in the wake of fellow New Jerseyite Bruce Springsteen’s success, moves away from his traditional R&B sound with his side project, The Poor Fools, who play acoustic versions of songs by other artists — Richard Thompson, NRBQ, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris — as well as vintage Ashbury Jukes material. At the Iron Horse in Northampton Friday; Pegi Young & The Survivors open the 7 p.m. show.

ANOTHER GOOD BET

Hampshire College’s main gallery just opened an exhibit by Anchor House of Artists, the collective that helps support artists living with mental illness. Works by Genevieve Burnett, Kevin Bouricius and others will be on display through Sept. 27. Mondays-Fridays, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sundays 2-5 p.m.
