HONORING A FIREBRAND
The Valley’s activist community will turn out Sunday to mark the 45th birthday of the feisty local chapter of the American Friends Service Committee, started in 1968 in Frances Crowe’s basement. People will testify to the good works — from draft counseling, to peace rallies, to anti-apartheid leadership — of the group. Since Crowe, now 94, ran it for more than three decades, expect speakers to pay tribute to her. Lyman Hall First Churches, Center Street, Northampton, 3 to 6 p.m.
ANOTHER GOOD BET
“In a World,” written, directed by and starring Lake Bell, is a gem of a movie. The acting is spot-on, the comedy subtle but also hilarious. And the message is one worth hearing, though it’s never preachy. After I saw it, I wanted to see it again immediately. At Amherst Cinema through Sept. 19.
