The windows of the Northampton Center for the Arts’ Bart J. Gordon Performance Hall, aka “the ballroom,” offer a commanding view of State, Main and Elm streets, including this wavy visage of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Some of the panes, rippled with age, may be from the building’s original incarnation as Northampton High School in the early 1900s. After nearly 30 years at the corner of Elm and New South streets, the center is set to move out; its last scheduled event will be a figure-drawing class on Wednesday. I’ve had a love/hate relationship photographing in this space for more than half of that time. The light from its northern exposure could rival that of a Rembrandt painting, but turn around and the backlight would be tortuous. An acoustic musical set could be exquisite; a spoken word performance might be indecipherable. I don’t know what’s in store for this space. Certainly, the Northampton Center for the Arts will live on. But the ballroom will have to work its charms on someone else.
