Steve Pfarrer’s Best Bets
I recently read Anthony Wiencek’s “Master of the Mountain,” a controversial portrait of Thomas Jefferson that posits our third president, despite his earlier calls for ending slavery, coldly and willingly built a slave empire to finance his home and lavish lifestyle at Monticello. Some Jefferson scholars have denounced the book and faulted Wiencek’s research, but to me “Master of the Mountain” seems an important read and a welcome counterpoint to decades of past hagiography of Jefferson.
