Are you the first in your family to speak English as a first language? Grow up in the United States? Graduate from college? Be incarcerated? Not be incarcerated? Be openly GLBT? If so, you may qualify for the First Generation Ensemble, the Springfield-based arts and youth leadership program that performs throughout western Massachusetts. Presented under the auspices of Northampton’s Performance Project, the First Generation Benefit Concert 2013 on Saturday at the Academy of Music in Northampton promises a pulsating evening of music and theater featuring an all-star lineup, including vocalist Evelyn Harris, sax virtuoso Charles Neville, master bassist Avery Sharpe, composer/musician Jo Sallins (pictured), Tony Vacca of World Rhythms Ensemble and Senegalese Kora player Youssoupha Sidibe, along with the First Generation Theater Ensemble.
The 7-9 p.m. concert will be followed by a meet-the-artists reception, 9-11 p.m., at R. Michelson Galleries down the block from the Academy. Tickets are $15 general seating and $50 for select seating and to attend the reception. academyofmusictheatre.tix.com or 584-9032
