An Orwellian term that supposedly originated with the U.S. Department of Defense, “perception management” refers to techniques for exploiting the basic human need to select, organize and interpret sensory input in order to give meaning and order to the world. It involves contextualizing and arranging information in such a way as to create ambiguity and doubt in situations where matters might otherwise appear straightforward and clear. And it’s now a large and sophisticated business engaged in by the cadre of those who, as Hillary Rodham Clinton recently put it, “refuse to live in an evidenced-based world.”

“A Burning Question: Propaganda and the Denial of Climate Change,” a new documentary from the Northampton-based Media Education Foundation written and directed by Paula Kehoe, follows an imaginary citizen as he sets out to unravel conflicting views about climate change. He proceeds to clear a path through the well-orchestrated pandemonium and to explain why more than 99 percent of climate scientists believe global warming to be real and to be caused mainly by the burning of fossil fuels.

Friday’s screening by the Northampton Committee to Stop War(s) will be followed by a discussion. 7 p.m. at the Media Education Foundation, 60 Masonic Street in Northampton.
