HADLEY — A new gospel choir composed of 30 local residents will perform holiday music Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Hadley.
The Amherst Area Gospel Choir formed in early November, said director Jacqueline Wallace of Amherst. The choir is multi-racial and multi-generational, and many of the singers are affiliated with Hope Community Church and Goodwin Memorial AME Zion Church in Amherst and with Wesley Methodist and First Congregational churches in Hadley.
The featured performer will be Michelle Brooks-Thompson of Sunderland, who has gained national attention through her appearance on the TV show “The Voice.” She is now negotiating a recording contract, Wallace said. Brooks-Thompson, a graduate of Amherst Regional High School, will perform three songs Saturday.
There will be some traditional gospel numbers and others in the rock and jazz styles, Wallace said. The audience will be invited to sing along on “Silent Night” and “Angels We Have Heard on High.” Five musicians from the Amherst schools and the churches will provide the accompaniment.
Donations will benefit mission work at the four churches and the Amherst Survival Center.
